Having watched both Longoria and Sandoval, THIS SEASON, play extensively at 3B... in my mind, there is NO QUESTION WHAT SO EVER, that Pablo is, far and away, the better defender over there.
Quick feet, MUCH softer hands, stronger and MUCH more accurate arm.

I always said Pablo was a better defender when he got more rest. His limited pt before Evan's injury has kept him fresh and quick. I also think, despite his rough start, Evan is better than he has shown with the glove this year. Regardless, Evan is better against lefties which is why the job is his when healthy.

Lord, I hope he's better with the glove than he's shown, Randy, because to me, he looked shaky all too often.

you want to talk about horrible defense, McCutchen just made the WORST throw from the outfield I've ever seen. I say the outfield but really it was no deeper than deep 2nd base. That runner should have been out by 30 feet.

It's possible that when Pablo is in shape, he's a better fielder than Longoria. On both sides of the ball, Evan is simply a shadow of himself. A decent shadow, but a shadow nonetheless.

I agree. That throw, a relatively short one for an outfielder, ranks close to the worst I've ever seen. Dave Kingman in his 1st or 2nd season, in RF for the Giants airmailing one into the stands behind the plate.
Really, for a veteran like McCutchen, that's inexcusable.

The A's are running on McCutchen's arm all day today.

From what I've seen from Andrew in the first half of this season, Randy, he looks for all the world like a player quickly coming to the end of his run.
His defense LAST YEAR was marginally terrible, and this year "iffy" would be a kind word with which to describe it.
Power? Where has his power gone?
He's become Hunter Pence; no loft to the balls he hits.
I see mostly ground balls and line drives.
No lift at all.
We need Longoria to come back and be Longoria.
We need a LF that can hit with some power.
I like Gorkys and he's had a great season, but he is NOT a power guy.
11 fluke HRs.
Don't think he'll get to 15

this core group has seen its last WS, my friend. It's time to forget this mild tinkering crap. We need major change

So whom would you move, Randy.
Be specific, please.
Me?
From what you are calling the 'core' group, I keep Crawford and Panik and Belt.
They all have a lot of good baseball left in them.
As to the rest?
Bum would get us a lot, as would Posey.
But management would never, EVER trade Posey, especially with Joey Bart at least a year away.
They would also NEVER throw in the towel and rebuild.
They just won't do it.
Hanson is not the answer at either 2B or SS, and neither is Captain Klank, Miguel Gomez.
Both can hit and run, but defense?
They can't even spell it, and that's what both Crawford, Belt and Panik give us.
I eagerly await your response.

I hold NOBODY back in order to infuse solid young players. Sentiment is the enemy of progress. Yes we all would love to see our favorites stay. But it's unknown how long the rebuild would take and who knows how quickly the guys you love today will break down?

Hanson is not the answer at either 2B or SS, and neither is Captain Klank, Miguel Gomez. Both can hit and run, but defense? They can't even spell it, Rog -- Now THAT'S clever writing. Although I myself had to look up "writing" in the dictionary to be sure I spelled it correctly. It took a long time because I mistakenly started with the letter "D."
