I'm not one for beating my own chest, but I've been railing for Buster to bat 5 hole for months now!
And last night, on the PREGAME show, Flannery, too, said that 5 is the best spot for him.
With that sore hip taking his power away, 5 is a very good spot for him because he IS a good hitter with excellent hand-to-eye coordination.
He must read the board because after my continual whinning about him, he's begun driving in runs.
And of course, now I've jinxed him.

Dude...I could have sworn you said SEVERAL times that you liked Buster in the 2nd spot.

Sort of, but not quite.
I said I could live with him in the 2 spot.
I also said I preferred him in the 2 hole OVER the 3 or 4 hole because I'D USE HIM to H/R and I'd do it a lot.
But prior to that, going back to early May, I was ranting on and on and on about Buster's power being gone and that 3/4 hole was a ridiculous place for a guy with no power.
I wanted him 5 or 6 hole, but MAN! Did I get hammered for THAT thought!
Since then we've found that Buster was hurt...which ticks me off even more because Bochy KNEW he was hurting and STILL put him 3/4 hole!
I believe I called Bochy stubborn...and that also, got me hammered by this board.
I'm not stupid.
I know the game as well as anyone on this board, and I resent, and still resent, begin treated like some propeller head whose nose is so buried in Sabermetrics he has no idea what he's talking about.
Not saying that you're doing that here.
That's not what I mean.
But my ideas were so poo-pooed that it was insulting.

Someone not agreeing with you is different than dismissing your opinion altogether, Boly. I don't know of anyone on this board that doesn't have great respect for you and your opinion.

I originally thought Buster would be a good hit-and-run man, but to me that gets away from his strength, which seems to be waiting to get his pitch to hit and then hitting it. Buster is good at spoiling pitches, so he should be good at protecting the runner, but he probably won't hit the ball as hard and hard as often. The advantages of the hit and runs are of course: . Avoids the double play. . Moves up the runner. . By having the runner in motion, he's more apt to take the extra base. The disadvantages are: . Batter hits for a lower average. . Batter hits with less power. . Batter doesn't walk as often. More and more, managers are seeing that the negatives can outweigh the positives, and the hit-and-run play is being used less and less. With the type of hitter Buster is, I think the negatives grow. I know you see it pretty much the opposite, so I'm curious as to your reasons. Okay, boagie, that's fair.
I took the opposition the wrong way.
My apologies to all.

Current lineup theory says that a team's top hitter should bat 2nd, 3rd or 4th. To me, that means that a team's top three hitters should usually bat #2, #3 and #4. Buster is still one of the Giants' top three hitters I think, which means to me that he should hit in one of the those positions. There are other factors of course that enter into the decision, and one thing the manager should consider is the hand of the pitcher (as Bruce did last night). Buster is a much better hitter against southpaws than against portsiders.
That last night he bat in one of the three key spots I mentioned was pretty much dictated by the pitcher's hand. The biggest weakness I saw was that D'Arnaud had to lead off. He's likely not a good enough hitter to do so, but neither is Duggar against southpaws. Complicating lineup construction now is also that Crawford is in such a slump.

Crawford carried this team for...what, almost 2 1/2 months?
Something like that, and now, understandably, he's slumping.
But worse that even that is the total and complete power outage that has occurred.
When was McCutchen's last HR?
Belts?
Those things shouldn't be happening.
Buster's power slump has a reason; injury.
Belt and McCutchen have no such excuse.
Longoria will be back soon and that will help.
Time to get the train moving, boys, time to get it moving.
