stats geeks never played the game...that's why they don't get it and never will

We are getting closer and closer to the trade deadline, after which we will lose McCutchen and Pence and Jackson, getting absolutely nothing in return. We are not far out of first but we have 3 teams ahead of us. Cueto and Bumgarner are clearly not themselves after injuries. At what point do we throw in the towel and get what we can for the vets we will not get back next year?

I can't see the Giants doing that, Randy, I really can't.
And honestly, I wouldn't cash the season in yet, either.
But you are right on the mark with Bum, that's for sure.
2 very good games...and then these last 2; not impressive at all.
I really don't care that his velocity is down, but I DO CARE about his continual location mistakes.
Once-upon-a-time he was feared...now? I don't get the impression that he is.
I'm going to wait another 4 or 5 starts until I definitively make up my mind about him, but if this is what we're going to get...well, that's not good.
As to Cueto, only 1 game, so for me, it's wait and see for him, too.
I'll give him 6 or 7 games until I make up my mind on him.
But one thing is for SURE; McCutchen had better get that bat in gear, and right the stink now.
This .250ish nonsense for him is ridiculous.

the problem is you only have a couple of weeks to make up your mind. Boly. You can't wait too long to decide or the trade market dries up and you're stuck with old guys who aren't producing

I think we're talking about 2 different things here, Randy.
I don't move Cueto or Bum this year.
As to McCutchen, I wait until the last minute and see where we are.
IF we're close, and by close I mean, within 4 games, I keep him, and I become a buyer.
If we fall 6 or more games behind, then he's gone.
And for Mccutchen, there will be buyers right up to the bell.

Is Mccutchen really producing anyway? I don't think trading him away would seal our fate of not competing in Aug and Sept. To me, Mccutchen, Samardjiza and Melancon are on the table either way. If the Giants are out of it, we might see more painful moves made.

Here's why I mentioned Bum and Johnny...it isn't that I'm looking to move them but I certainly would listen to offers for them that include can't missers. But the way they are pitching and particularly since Johnny's elbow has not been treated formally and could blow up at any time, the team's chances of actually making the playoffs, much less win a world series, are pretty slim. It would be a better option to get what we can for our vets with expiring deals and load up as best we can with better younger talent.

I think Randy is right that the Giants should probably be sellers at the deadline, and I think Boly is right that they should wait as long as they can to finalize that decision.

I don't think Johnny can be moved right now without keeping a large amount of salary, but Madison could be traded for value. He's got a season and a third left on his contract at a very team-friendly salary. Madison may block eight teams.
