As we get closer and closer to opening day, I am finding I am becoming more and more concerned about our pitching.
I've now watched about 6 games, and very seldom have I seen ANY of the pitchers I've seen do well.
Last night Holland gave up 3 HRs; His Kryptonite in his time in the pros.
Dyson got rocked.
Melancon has barely pitched.
Smith isn't likely to pitch very much, if at all , prior to the start.
And based upon the latest numbers on the Giant web site:
Samardzja has given up 17 hits in 11 ip
Dyson, 13 hits in 6 ip
Cueto 12 hits in 9 ip.
Neither Black nor Stratton has put any distance between themselves and the others competing for the 4 and 5 slots.
And in general, the pitchers haven't really thrown enough innings to be ready to start the season.
We're scoring a lot of runs... against mostly guys who won't be on 25 man rosters... but we're not exactly doing a good job of preventing the same.
It's getting late.
Time to start pitching better.

Your concern would seem to be justified, Boly. The bullpen in particular hasn't shown stability.
Where is George Kontos now that we need him!!!

This season, even though it hasn't even begun, is starting to feel like it's over before it has even begun.
Our starters HAVE to improve.
Cueto was hurt much of last year, so for him, I have a some hope.
But the bullpen?
Man!
Too many holes.
Too many unanswered questions.
I'm hoping that near the break, we can make some big deals for a starter if needed.

It hasn't been an overall good spring for our pitchers, but Osich, Strickland and Gerrin have been good. Bumgarner has been his usual self. Blach and Stratton have been decent. Cueto hasn't been good, but he hasn't exactly sucked either. Samardjiza has sucked, but we've grown to expect that from him. So much so that many of you believe he's doing his job.

Wow Boly I'm as shocked as Claude Raines was to find there was gambling at Rick's Cafe in Casablanca. Imagine YOU giving up on the season before it begins...inconceivable! I'm not ready to plan for another parade on Market Street but I'm as hopeful as a person could be after a 98 loss season. I agree that the team may get off to a sluggish start but I expect both Bum and Jonny to come out with guns blazing which should help stem the tide some until both Melancon and Smith are healthy and the bullpen is at full strength. I also expect we will see Curt Young work his magic with our young starters and with guys like Osich, who is one of the few who has had a very good spring.

I'm surprised by my reactions, too, Randy.
I really am.
But part of the "new eyes for me" thingy is to try and see what's really there, as opposed to what "I'd like to see."
And I just don't like what I see.
I had SUCH high hopes for last year... only to have those hopes stomped on, crushed, and beaten out of me.
I'm not ready to go through that again.
I sincerely hope you are right; that the new coaches DO work some magic;
That Pence and Crawford DO bounce back;
That Belt actually DOES what we've been waiting for; take the next step.
The reality is, LA can put 5 very good, to above average starters out there everyday.
The best WE can hope for right now, is 2.
I have NOT given up. That I promise you.
I just don't like the feel of things.
It's a long season, and there is so much that can happen.
Like Justin Turner down with a broken wrist; trades that we can make.
My fingers are crossed.

What you're overlooking is all those LA pitchers, aside from Kershaw, can easily slide and have poor to awful seasons themselves. LA had a near magical season but they have also had years where they underachieved. They can have a year where their best player gets Scott Cousined as happened to us in '11. It's been known to happen. I don't expect they will slide as deeply as the Giants did last year but until they prove it on the field, we cannot assume the '18 Dodgers will be every bit as good as the '17 Dodgers. Maybe you're reading to much hype in the LA Slimes. I'm sure they're predicting a reformation of the Koufax/Drysdale times.
As I said, I'm not expecting a parade...but I'm expecting to be a team that none of the big boys will want to face in the postseason.

I'm expecting a parade. If it doesn't happen the season is a dissapointment.

Samardjiza has sucked, but we've grown to expect that from him. So much so that many of you believe he's doing his job. Rog -- So I take it you are ignoring the cupboardful of evidence that shows he wasn't as bad as it appeared. And that even a 4.42 ERA pitcher who leads the league in innings pitched has value. WAR isn't everything as a measure, but it's used by general managers. Jeff finished second among Giants pitchers and fourth among all Giants players. Apparently his biggest fault though is that he didn't walk enough batters. Incidentally, Boagie, what did you think of the analysis of the homers Jeff yielded on his two-seamer? It's a long season, and there is so much that can happen. Like Justin Turner down with a broken wrist; trades that we can make. Rog -- It's going to be really tough for the Giants to make trades and still stay below the cap. On the other hand, they worked some magic in that area over the winter. One difficulty that they face is how do you get better by trading salary for younger, inexpensive players who are good enough to improve your team more than the highly-salaried player you're trading? If the player is older and more expensive, why would the other team trade for him? Another issue is how do you overcome injuries when your roster isn't all that deep and the youngsters on the come aren't coming hard enough or bringing enough to the table? Steven Duggar should help along the way, although he's being exposed a little as spring training moves to the stage of better players participating more. But how much more is there coming? Remember how last season we were impressed with the swings of Austin Slater and Ryder Jones? How is that pair looking now? Slater has struck out a voluminous 12 times in just 34 at bats, and Jones is projected to hit .237. The Giants have a lineup that looks good now and should improve when Duggar is fully seasoned. But they are vulnerable to the inevitable injuries. The pitching has potential but is still in flux. It too is horribly threatened in case of injury. One of the reasons the Dodgers are so good is that they have tremendous depth at both the major league and minor league levels. After an exciting spring, I'm confident about Madison Bumgarner going forward, but it was discouraging to find that both he and Johnny Cueto were among the 36 worst last season in allowing well-hit balls.
I was all for the Cueto signing at the time, but I'm very worried about it now. Boagie may find it intriguing to know I was against the Samardzija signing.
