I need some help and advice.
Candee and I are going to be up in SF on a cruise, early in April.
We've done this cruise once before, and from the cruise terminal to pier 39, is about a 20 or so minute walk.
So my questions:
1-How much further is the walk to Fisherman's Wharf?
2-Is it even worth the trip?
3-What's at the Wharf that is not at pier 39?
Thanks!
boly

Fisherman's wharf is the tourist area around Pier 39 and all the tourist traps around it. It's not really a specific destination.

Pier 39 is pretty much adjacent to the Wharf. If you have a few hours you might want to take a walk to the ballpark. The Giants Dugout Store should be open and there are lots of restaurants nearbuy

Rog -- I'm guessing it takes about three minutes to get from Pier 39 to Fisherman's Wharf. What the wharf has that pier 39 doesn't have is ambiance. If you have time, keep walking along the bay all the way to the Municipal Pier and walk out to the end of it. Very scenic, and it may be the SF point closest to Alcatraz. It will probably double your walking time to do so. Take a cab back to Pier 27 to save time -- or backtrack on foot as much as you want. Fisherman's Wharf is listed as 1.1 miles from Pier 27. In the old days, the ships came into Pier 35, which was within five minutes or so of Pier 39 (two piers away). As Randy mentioned though, Pier 27 is closer to the ball park. If you e-mail me and let me know when you and Candee are coming, Boly, if I'm not working, I would love to meet you guys at Pier 27 and be your guide. I'm fairly familiar with the area, and in fact 40 years ago I walked daily from the Ferry Building to work at Pier 35 for one of the cruise lines at that time (Pacific Far East Line). With the cruise ships occasionally docking, it was a cool place to work. I don't think I've ever been TO Pier 27, but years ago I certainly walked past it a lot. I don't believe it was used for cruise ships back then. I worked there as Pier 39 was being built. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/4325/sf-assistance#ixzz58Z0wB1LH

Thanks, Rog, and Randy and boagie.
I don't mind a really long walk, but Candee is a little reluctant to trek a couple of miles one way, and then back.
But if it's just a few minutes further, I'm sure she'd be okay with that.
Thanks again!

And you should easily be able to get a cab, Uber or Lift back if necessary.

If you stay near the wharf there are lots of outdoor clam chowder venders...the chowder is excellent in a fresh sourdough bowl

Excellent point about the clam chowder, Randy. It's New England Chowder, not Manhattan Chowder. The outdoor seafood vendors you mention right in front of Alioto's and Fisherman's Grotto #9 are pretty cool.

I love clam chowder, but Candee?
Anything with a 'fishy' smell, and she's, well, hmmmm. Shall I said, not interested?
But I, on the other hand, might just take them up on that!

Thank you for the offer, Rog, and if we had more than just a few hours, Candee and I would have said 'yes.'
But with so little time, and being unsure of what our plans will be OTHER than what time lunch is served and what time we dock...we have to pass.
still, that was exceptionally nice of you to offer your time!
Maybe next time we're up that way.
Come to think of it, Rog, we will be on another cruise up your way in, I believe, October of 2019.
The ship stays over night in SF, so maybe we could get together then.
I'll keep you posted.

The Giants could not have chosen a better spot for the yard. I absolutely love walking up and down the Embarcadero...love hanging out at the wharf...and of course having drinks after a game at MoMo's, Pedro's or any of the cool watering holes in the area.

Rog -- That would give us something to look forward to. Only thing is that your trip could mess up the postseason for you! Maybe we could get together to watch, say Game 7 of the NLCS -- Bumgarner vs. Kershaw! Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/4325/sf-assistance#ixzz58exscWok

The Giants could not have chosen a better spot for the yard. Rog -- The location is far, far better than the one proposed at 6th street where the ramp to 280 is. At the time that initiative failed though, I feared we have lost the Giants. I remember driving by the spot on our way home and being very wistful. Regarding AT&T: . As Don can attest, it is very different from the Polo Grounds, but it has something of a different shape because of the long, think strip it was built on. . The Giants feared the "short porch" in right field would make the park a homer haven, particularly after Kevin Elster hit three homers (the other way). . The field developers are said to have forgotten about the bullpens, necessitating their being on the field. I'm not so sure about that one and think it may well have been for ambiance and because of the shape of the field. . As I mentioned in another thread, the difficulty of hitting homers for lefties should give us an added appreciation for the home run exploits of Barry Bonds. I believe one season he hit more homers at AT&T than all the visiting hitters combined. We may not like what Barry did to increase both the size and length of his career, but has anyone here seen a better hitter? As a hitting coach, Boly, I would think you could do worse than using Barry's swing as a model for some of your hitters. I've had the pleasure of traveling up to what was then PacBell, once, and now AT&T twice, and I could not agree more!
What a great place!
What makes it even more interesting for me, is that in many old, Dirty Harry movies, THAT exact location is shown...what a run down, dumpy, crappy area it was... and to see what it now IS!
Spectacular!
And once inside, the ability to walk completely around the INSIDE of the park! Wow!!!
A one of a kind place!
And don't even get me started on the food selections!
I could, and tried to, eat myself sick!

im always amazed at the spectacular view on either side...one side the SF skyline and the other side the SF bay. Each time I go to a game, it's impossible for me to be in a bad mood, even if we lose. The total experience is always positive.

I agree, Randy.
AT&T is a magical place!
Best venue I've EVER seen for watching a game.
I don't think there is really a bad seat in the house.
And though I haven't sat in all of them, I've walked to darned near every part of the park where there's a seat and watched...
Thus I say with confidence, not a bad seat in the house.
Especially when compared to OTHER ball parks.
Worst Iv'e seen is Angel Stadium.
You can have a bad seat in the first tier facing 3B.
As you walk away from the field towards the snack area, the angle is so shallow, that 15 rows from the field, it's like you're 6 miles away.
I sat in CF once...and it felt like I needed the Hubble Telescope to even see the hitter!
There there is Boston, with the pillars and poles.
No thanks.

Worst venue I ever saw a game in was the Kingdome in Seattle. Baseball is not meant to be played inside. Chase field in Arizona, awful. I feel bad for fans that have to go to ball games inside, it takes the whole experience away.
