I watched some video lately, and began comparing the swings of Belt and Shaw, and what follows are my observations.
1-Both are long armed hitters which causes inherent problems as their swings unfold.
2-Though Brandon's swing is shorter, and more direct to the ball, he ALWAYS dips that back shoulder which CAUSES the bat to go through the hitting zone with the barrel pointing downward often looking like a Criquette Bat. Which, as I've said many times, CAUSES those prolonged 'couldn't hit air' slumps he goes through.
3-Shaw's swing is flatter and is in the hitting zone much longer than Brandon's.
4-Though there is a slight backwards/loopy-ish movement at start up for Shaw's swing, his hands are quick to the ball.
5-Both have the power to drive the ball to the opposite field, and drive it out.
6-But Since Shaw's swing is flatter and in the zone longer, he's 'likely' to make more, consistent contact.
My conclusion: Shaw...IF he can make the adjustments, both mental and physical, to play at the Major League level, likely will be a much better, much more consistent hitter

I dont think Shaw will get a chance this year given the logjam at 1st base and left field...unless he goes completely off in ST and hits like 20 HRs or something.

I don't disagree, Randy. I was just posting what I observed.
However, I ALSO believe that IF the Giants are out of it by the trade deadline, Belt WILL BE MOVED, and Shaw given the shot.
Just based upon swings and NOTHING else, I think Shaw has more upside potential at the plate than Belt does.

I'll take the other side on the Belt/Shaw comparison. I think Brandon will hit for a higher average and even a higher slugging percentage than Chris. I understand what you're saying about Brandon's swing, Boly. In the sense of keeping a level bat, he's one of the worst. But he has very good plate discipline, and that helps make up the difference.
Shaw has a far more level swing and, frankly, looks better hitting. As you say, his swing is long, and I'd like to see him have his bat slightly more at the ready in his stance. He seems to run a lot better than his 20 scouting rating would indicate. He's pretty ponderous in the outfield though. I think first base has to be his spot.
I have a feeling he LOOKS better hitting than his results would dictate. I really like the swing, but it appears he needs to control it. I have a feeling that if Chris had Belt's plate control, he'd be dynamite. But clearly he doesn't.
Based on their swings I certainly wouldn't predict it, but I still believe Brandon will be the better hitter of the two. And just think what a great cricket player he would make.
Incidentally, a great cricket bowler a decade or so ago had a motion after his run up that was surprisingly close to Tim Lincecum's. I don't know if he lost it in 2012 or not.
Regarding Tim and his no-hitters, it has been said that it doesn't necessarily take a great pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Tim demonstrated that in that his two no-hitters came not when he was one of the best pitchers in baseball but later, when he was struggling.

I don't disagree that Chris' swing has more potential than Brandon's, but I don't think he'll reach it. If he gains plate control though, watch out!
