The Giants are said to still be expressing interest in Billy Hamilton. The Reds are said to be interested in Heliot Ramos. Those two sentences don't come close to fitting together. Heliot Ramos will not be traded for Billy Hamilton. As we discussed elsewhere, within a year Steven Duggar might make Hamilton moot anyway.
Now, the Giants could certainly use Raisel Iglesias, the pitcher Mark mentioned. They could even use former Giants Adam Duvall, who has turned out to be a good fielder as well as a so-so hitter with a lot of power. Duvall's main flaw is not getting on base. HIS OBP's the past two seasons are .297 and .301. His power would translate pretty well to AT&T Park though.
As the fall and winter go on, I keep going back and forth on the various situations. Here's where I stand right now. (Tomorrow might be different, as I assimilate more information.)
. Now that it isn't happening, I'm finally coming around on the Giancarlo Stanton trade. I now wish it had happened.
. I may change my position if the Giants add the proper complementary pieces, but as of right now I'm not in favor of the Evan Longoria trade. He was a completely different type of hitter last season. If that was because he was playing through an injury that won't seriously affect him now, I might change my position. But based on what we know now, I'm too worried about a significant downturn from him. On a related point, it's hard to imagine him playing such good (Gold Glove and probably deservedly so) defense if he were playing through an injury.
. I'm excited about Steven Duggar and wouldn't give up much money or players for a center fielder.
. I would put the remaining available money into a right fielder, but I don't see one on the free agent market that I would sign.
. I'm feeling more positive about the bullpen than the rotation right now, although the Giants' two best relievers are coming off surgery, which is a significant concern. But if Melancon and Smith are healthy, the Giants' bullpen should be OK.
