Whom should the Giants be targeting for center and right fields? What would we be willing to give to get these players? Does that fit the Giants' budget? (Let's assume Mark is right that the Giants have $20 million to spend. If that is the case, the Giants should be able to put something together. Apparently after the Longoria trade, they have more to spend than before it -- magic!)

Rog -- The Giants' goal is the same as that of the Dodgers -- to be as competitive as possible without exceeding the Luxury Tax threshold. Pocketing the $20 million goes against that goal. Assuming we have estimated the threshold correctly, we SHOULD be shocked if most of it goes back into their pockets.

Boagie- I think youre partly right, Randy. But think back at how many things Sabean and Evans have told you in conversations with them, and then think back at how many articles you've read online by people like that bumbling fool Nightengale. I think logic shows that it's the fake media that's deceived us, not the Giants management.

Perhaps you would like to give us examples of where either or both deceived us. Give us links! Regarding Nightengale, by the way, this time of year he deals primarily with rumors. And most rumors aren't going to come true. But if it weren't for rumors, we'd have very little baseball input this off-season. It's been a particularly slow one thus far. Today's the day after Christmas, but there's hardly anything going on at MLB Trade Rumors. Regarding Nightengale and the Giants' front office, if you're anywhere near as far off on them as you are on Carlos Beltran, I think we should take it with a grain of salt. Don has his Buster Posey; Boly and Randy have their Brandon Belt; and you have your Carlos Beltran. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/4225/center-right#ixzz52PGYw3So

JP Morosi is reporting that the Giants continue to talk to the Reds about Billy Hamilton and even held talks today. Sabean was optimistic that a deal for an outfielder might be expanded to include a reliever. If the Reds would toss Raisel Iglesias into this deal I would be very happy.

The only question I have, Mark, is why would they throw in anyone else?
From what I can find/see, the hold up to get Blazin' Billy is that the Reds are asking too much in return.
As I said, if Panik is what they're asking, that's all ready too much for a guy who can't get on base or hit for any average what-so-ever.
Why weaken 2B defense, and give up a guy who can hit, to get a guy who plays great defense, can't hit, AND it weakens our infield defense.
I like Billy's defense, but I'm not giving up the farm for the guy, or even one of my bell-cows

What would the Giants have to give up for Hamilton and Iglesias? What would be the Reds' motivation for trading Iglesias in particular, but to trade even Hamilton? Do they have a prospect ready to replace him?
Iglesias may have starting potential as well as closing, so the Giants might be able to fit him in while keeping Melancon as closer.
What effect would the signing of Jared Hughes have on the Reds' willingness to let Iglesias go? Would the Reds be willing to take Steven Duggar for Hamilton? If so, would that be a good deal for the Giants?
How could the Giants offer enough to get both players? What are the Reds' needs? What is the time frame of their organizational plan?

I wouldn't give up the untried Duggar for Hamilton, Rog.
Duggar 'appears' able to hit.
Hamilton can't.
His track record at the plate is borderline terrible, for a lead off guy.

I wouldn't trade Panik for Hamilton. That would be creating one hole to fill another. The Giants don't have a true replacement for Panik.
The Reds already have a good second baseman in Scooter Gennett, and an intriguing backup in Jose Peraza.
Phil Ervin is the Reds' backup in center, and I'm not sure his defense is good enough for center field. Scott Schebler is listed as their second backup, and he doesn't look like a center fielder either.
Anyone know which center field prospects the Reds have who might be close?

I think my point is that based upon what I'm hearing, the Reds are asking for far too much for the guy.

I don't really see the need for a guy like Hamilton unless he's used as a bench player. He'd make a good defensive replacement and pinch runner, otherwise I see very little value. I'd rather go with someone like Duggar as the starting center fielder.

I agree, boagie.
But I'm not sure what the Giant thinking is.
Are they looking to fill a one year gap until Duggar is ready?
If that's the case, we can hang up any ideas of moves to bring a pennant soon; like this year.
We need a CF, an a RF exactly as you described.
And I just don't see Bruce filling that bill.

The trouble with right field is there aren't really any free agents that I see who fill the bill. Bruce would be costly, play poor defense and lose homers to AT&T. Martinez would cost a fortune, play horrid defense, and lose a large number of home runs to AT&T.
