I wanted to ask Boly about Strat-O-Matic -- the first two specific, and the last one general.
. How does Strat rate the fielding of Eduardo Nunez?
. Did Joey Votto's fielding rating take a dip in 2016?
. Finally, I'm sure there must be some Strat-O-Matic ratings, particularly of Giants players, that would be intriguing to us. Would you mind sharing some of those with us, Boly -- now and as they come up? I guess a subset of this would be ratings you were/are surprised about. As you share these ratings, would you mind sharing how they work? I think I got it right that base running (not necessarily speed) was on a 1-20 scale, and that the highest you had seen was 1-17 (Willie Mays) and the lowest 1-8 (Ernie Lombardi). I couldn't understand what the "1" meant. Fielding is a 1-5 scale, with 1 the highest and 5 the lowest?

I'm still curious about how how the various rating work, Boly. And I'm curious about how Eduardo Nunez is rated as a fielder and if Joey Votto took a big drop in fielding for the 2016 season.

Rog, the numerical fielding number is one thing for an outfielder, another for an infielder.
For an infielder, firstly, it represents the ability to 'go get the ball;' Range.
It also HAS to reflect the players ability to 'start' the double play.
Thus someone like Panik and Crawford are "1's" not just for range, as Brandon's range is MUCH better than Joe's, but their ability to get DPs.
For an outfielder, it's strictly the ability to run down the ball.
Outfielders also get a rating based upon their arms.
Lots of players have strong arms but CAN they stop runners from taking the extra base?
thus Juan Pierre was the worst OF arm rating I've ever seen +3.
Everyone, including Mark, boagi and I, ran on him successfully.
Clemente was a -6.
Meaning IF you were foolish enough to try, chances are you'd be walking back to the dugout early than you wanted.

Thanks for the explanation. I understand it at least a LITTLE better now.
So how is Eduardo Nunez rated as a fielder, and how does that compare to average? And did Joey Votto's fielding rating take a big dip in 2016?

Until the 2016 season, he was a '4' every where.
In 2016, for the first time ever, he got a '3' at 3B; which is average and reflects the number of DP's he started; something he hadn't done well in the past.

Did Votto take a hit in 2016?

On defense, no.
And rog, I answered all of the Votto/Nunez stuff in my original answer some 2 weeks ago.

I'm sorry, Boly, I must have missed the post. I'm very surprised that Hal didn't lower Joey's defensive rating in 2016. He didn't vote for Joey in his top 10 in 2016. Neither did anyone else. When I saw that Joey didn't receive a single vote, I counted up the points, and without Joey receiving one of them, they added up to the correct 660.
Hal voted for Joey for 5th place in 2015, and Joey finished 6th in the voting. This past season Hall voted 8th, and Joey finished 4th.
This is the kind of thing that baffles me, Boly. Apparently Joey had a very down season in the field in 2016. Hal recognized it, not giving Joey a top 10 vote. But then he didn't reflect that in his Strat-O-Matic ratings. I think someone erred a bit on that one.
By the way, I realized that if someone rarely erred, it would be a rhyming rare err, except that while it is usually pronounced "air," it is supposed to be pronounced "err," rhyming wit sir. The English language is a tough one, and it is amazing how often even smart people make mistakes with it.
Some would say I never gave Randy credit for teaching me anything, but I believe it was he who taught me that if you can count it, it's fewer, not less, and if you can't count it, it's less not err. Actually, Randy, I take it back. It was my mother who taught me that.
But you taught me the difference between ironic and coincidental. Nicely done.

Oh, and I'm not surprised that Hal didn't give Eduardo Nunez a very good defensive rating. I do think that Eduardo played the best defense of his career in 2016, and you mentioned that Hal gave him a three because of the double plays he started. Overall though, I don't think Eduardo is a very good fielder.
Nice, though, isn't it that Eduardo with the Giants in 2016 likely played the best defense of his career?

He isn't, that's for sure.
There are many reasons I don't want him back, and defense is at the top of that list.

At the top of my list is his being very injury-prone. Otherwise, even with bad defense, he could be a nice super sub, able to play all over the diamond, hit, show a little pop, and steal a lot of bases. You certainly wouldn't bring him in for defensive purposes, but he could start, pinch hit or pinch run.
With virtual iron man Evan Longoria at third base, Eduardo's value would be lessened though.
