The Phillies are said to be wanting to trade for pitching. Would you trade Jeff Samardzija and his $18 million per season contract for Aaron Altherr and Maikel Franco? The Giants would likely have to take a bad contract in the deal, but it might be for far less than Jeff's $18 million.
One problem with trading Samardzija now is that the field of free agent starting pitchers has been picked over to a degree. But the Giants must still be looking to free up more salary. When a team trades away salary, it leverages its money. It not only gets the players they trade for, but by freeing up money, they put themselves into position to further add to the team by free agency of picking up a more expensive contract in a trade.
I keep looking at the Giants' situation in as many ways as I can, and I don't see any easy solutions.
The Giants' park works against them too. They need more power, but power hitters understandably don't want to come to AT&T. AT&T is a speed and defense park, but the game is changing from speed and defense to getting on base and hitting homers. Kind of a paradox.
Pitching is still important, and power is even more important. But speed and defense are becoming less of the game.
The Giants haven't adapted to that very well.

I don't want anything to do with hackers, and Franco is a hacker, rog.
But I'd move Jeffy.
I do like the upside in Altherr, though.
