These are just rumors, of course, but the Cardinals are said to be leading in the Marcell Ozuna chase, and the Giants are indicated to be in "serious talks" regarding Billy Hamilton.
That the Giants would be heavily interested in Hamilton would seem to conflict with their seemingly growing confidence that Steven Duggar will soon be their center fielder. Another possibility of course is that they would include Duggar in the deal or trade him later.
Steven can play any outfield position, but he's short on power for a corner spot. On the other hand, I doubt he'll ever be as good defensively as Hamilton, which isn't to say Steven will be a bad defensive center fielder. I don't truly know enough about him to have a great idea, but whatever I have seen indicates to me that he'll be average or below. But that is simply an educated guess, and not a particularly educated one at that.

Oh boy. Hamilton.
Another lead off guy who can't get on base.
Swell.

My thoughts exactly, Boly. But hey, he can catch a baseball and he doesn't throw like a girl, so it's an upgrade.

That is true.
And we do need a 'go get 'em guy in CF.
I wouldn't be and I'm not, totally adverse to getting him as he would be an upgrade...
But, if he blocks Duggar, if he costs too much, I'd rather get 2 power bats, and live with Gorkys in CF for ONE year.
And let's be honest. If we are NOT going to get 2 power bats, or IF we only get 1 and go with Sandoval...we have no chance to compete anyway.
The more this process drags on, the more nonsense I hear from Evans and the Winter meetings, the LESS convinced I am that they are going to do anything substantial.
And by substantial, I mean some or all of the follwoing:
A CF
A RF
A 3B man.
Trading Jeffy the Stubborn
But if Hamilton costs us Panik, no way.

The Giants only have one catcher any where in the system capable of playing in the majors....and he is only scheduled to catch between 110 and 120, per their GM...where does the other 40 or 50 games come from?

That's a good point, Don.
There is no question we need one, but I'm 'guessing' that the fall back position would be Brown.
But isn't Federowicz still with us?
Not that he's any big deal, and neither is Brown, but honestly, back up catcher cannot be a priority... at least, not just yet.

Brown was hurt for most of the year, don.
Now I read that they are making a very strong push to bring Hundley back.
That would be a very good move.

I have thought all along that the Giants would re-sign Nick. Do you get rid of a guy immediately after he wins the Willie McCovey Award?
Nick's contribution was likely overrated last season. He wasn't too good defensively and after strong hitting seasons in 2015 and 2016 he fell back to his career average.
That the Giants got him for only $2 million last season was a coup. If one evaluates him based on his play on the field, he's probably worth $3 million this season. If one gives credence to the intangibles that won him the McCovey tribute, make it $4 million. If the Giants can get him for less, that's another coup.
Actually, after looking at his peripherals, he's fallen back offensively the past two seasons not because he's been unlucky; he's fallen back because he's fallen back. I think there are some other backups out there. Unless his intangibles are truly top-notch and will contribute to victory (I can't say they did last season), I'd offer $2.25 million and unless I'm wrong about other guys being out there, I'd look elsewhere if he didn't take it.
I haven't looked closely at the backup catcher market, but I think the Giants may have seen the best Nick has left. He's headed the wrong direction. Well worth what he made last season, but headed the wrong way.

But Roger, what he 'SAYS' and what he 'DOES' are often 2 different things.
He's not, or to this point HASN'T, done a darned thing but run his mouth.
When, or rather, IF he makes some moves, then I'll re evaluate him.
Until then, he's just a pair of talking lips.

But Roger, what he 'SAYS' and what he 'DOES' are often 2 different things. Rog -- In an ideal world, a GM could say what he wants and it would be done -- and on budget at that. Let me give you an example of a tough situation Bobby dealt with. With the Giants playing as poorly as they were, there was little doubt they needed to trade free-agent-to-be Eduardo Nunez at a minimum. Would have been nice to trade Johnny Cueto too. But Cueto had pitched poorly and was injured, stripping him of the possibilty of being traded. Nunez, of course, was traded. The Giants needed to get SOMETHING for him. The say thing though was that it was a buyers' market for position players. It would have been nice for the Giants to have gotten a nice package of prospects for Eduardo. As it was, they got two so-so prospects -- at best. Yet when one looked at the two guys they got, one could see that Shaun Anderson has a pretty decent floor. He is a college reliever who is being converted into a starter. If he fails as a starter, the feeling is that he might make the majors as a reliever in short order. The Giants also took a flier on 17-year-old starting pitcher Gregory Santos. Santos was playing in the Dominican Summer League, which is a LONG way from the major leagues. But even at 17 he was showing a propensity for not only gathering strikeouts, but forcing a lot of ground balls. A high-strikeout, high ground ball pitcher has the ideal mix. How will the trade work out? Obviously time will tell. But given that the market for position players was quite low, I felt the Giants received a nice combination of one "safe" pitcher and one long shot who could become a star if all broke right. No, Bobby's results haven't been too good overall. But as is the case now, he has mostly been limited by little to trade and little to spend on free agents. Tie both his hands behind his back, and it's tough to make great moves. My biggest question would be if the Giants are moving quickly enough from the old-fashioned scouting based front office to the more modern office blending of scouting and analytics. It's MUCH tougher to be a GM now. Almost all the front offices are smart. The very traditional things we embrace as a board overall are the things that may be holding the team back. Hence the changing of the guard with the coaches. As an aside, it is said that if the Giants had lost Hensley Meulens to the Yankees, their previous third base coach would have been named bench coach. He is the only deposed coach who didn't accept an alternative assignment, and the Giants were willing to give him a plum assignment if the opportunity had arisen. The Giants are said to believe that Sir Hensley won't make it through another winter without winning a managerial job.
