After losing out on their top two targets, the Giants are said to be after the Brewers' Domingo Santana (I like him at this point) and free agents Jay Bruce and Lorenzo Cain. The other team spurned by Giancarlo Stanton, the Cardinals, may also be competing with the Giants for these players.
I believe Santana had 30 homers and 15 steals last season. Yeah, he hit .278 with the totals mentioned.
Regarding the Brewers, MLB Trade Rumors also mentions "If the team prefers to keep the established asset, it might consider swaps involving Keon Broxton, Lewis Brinson, or Brett Phillips, each of whom could conceivably be a long-term answer in center field for the Brewers or another team."
Broxton hit only .220 but was a 20/20 man. Brinson is a top prospect. I don't know anything about Phillips.
That the Cardinals will be competing with the Giants indicates the Cardinals outfielders discussed earlier here may well be available. Working from memory, it seems Piscotty might be of interest. I remember looking up Bader, and he didn't look like much to me, although I know he was liked by at least one other poster here.
No specific mention of J.D. Martinez, although the Giants were connected with Martinez recently if Stanton didn't work out. Martinez is a poor fielder, but he hit the ball hard close to half the time last season IIRC. The good thing about the free agents, of course, is that the Giants don't have to give up a player or players to acquire them.
What the Giants likely need is at least one free agent and preferably more, plus a cunning trade or two. Even if they signed Stanton and Ohtani, their task wouldn't have been completed. Without either of them, the task becomes even bigger.
I continue to think that the Giants would be best served in the long term to bag the 2018 season and rebuild, perhaps with near-ready prospects so that they could be competitive by 2019 or at least 2020. But that would almost certainly cause problems at the gate.
The Giants seem to be in a Catch 22 1/2. That's where solving the Catch 22 still leaves you just short. And given their fielding woes of 2017, the Giants might well commit an error on their 22nd catch anyway -- if not one of the first 21.
