Clearly Giancarlo Stanton's value didn't decline when he was named NL MVP. Both he and Jose Altuve of the American League appeared the likely winners, and win they did.
Both the MVP voting and the Cy Young voting made me think of today's two top stars, Mike Trout and Clayton Kershaw. Look at how those players have fared in the MVP and Cy Young voting.
Trout has been on the Angels' roster six full seasons. He's won the MVP twice and finished second three times. He finished "only" fourth this season in great part because injury limited him to only 114 games. I'm guessing not too many players have ever finished as high as fourth in the MVP voting while missing nearly a third of the season.
Kershaw is another who missed a big chunk of the season yet finished high in voting. Despite starting only 27 games, he finished 2nd in this year's Cy Young voting. Over the past seven seasons, that gives him three wins, two seconds, a third and a fifth in 2016 when he missed a dozen starts. He won one MVP and has received votes in each of the last seven seasons except for 2016.
Kershaw won his fifth ERA title in the past seven seasons. In 2015 he posted a 2.13 mark, but lost out to the historic season of Zack Greinke. In 2016, his 1.69 ERA would have won the title, but he finished 13 innings short of qualificiations.
With the exception of Barry Bonds in the MVP and Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson in the Cy Young Award, has any other player so dominated these awards?

dk...one of the top hitters in the NL...Posey...didn't get one vote for MVP...neither did the Gold Glove shortstop...Crawford.... Rog -- Not surprising, given that neither had a boffo season, and the Giants lost 98 games. Posey improved offensively, but took a step back defensively, and riddled by family issues, Crawford may have taken a step back on each side of the ball. It's exciting though that late in the season, Brandon bounced back like flubber. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/4149/stanton-superstars#ixzz4ylUcMaeC

No Giant received even a single vote for either the MVP or the Cy Young Award. I can't remember the last time that happened.

This was within two games of the Giants' worst season in history.
