John Shea of the Chronicle reports that he's heard from two major league baseball industry sources that the Giants have talked to -- get this -- Scott Boras about J.D. Martinez. As Shea writes, in other words, the Giants aren't putting all their eggs in the Giancarlo Stanton basket.
With regard to the Giants, we've had a lot of disappointment in past off-seasons, as the Giants' name was mentioned with many very good players, but few of them materialized. This off-season though, it appears there is just too much smoke for their not to be fire -- and quite possibly a big fire.
With regard to Stanton, the Dodgers have said they're no in the running, although a report surfaced earlier this week that they might be. If the Dodgers seriously want him, they're going to get him. Although they say they are trying to cut salary (and have done so the past couple of seasons), if they want Stanton, they're likely to get him. They have the money. They have the prospects to trade. And most importantly, Stanton grew up rooting for them.
Question: If the Giants trade for Stanton, are we going to boycott him because he grew up a Dodgers fan? If we're going to stay true to hating the Dodgers, how can we in good conscience root for him?
