Earlier this season an ESPN writer ranked Lorenzo Cain as baseball's #10 defensive outfielder. Boagie and others have mentioned Cain as a potential free agent fit for the Giants.
Another fine defender who might be available in trade is Jarrod Dyson, whom the article ranked #7. In fact, they cited the comparison in the defensive abilities of the two, opining that Dyson ranked higher because he had an average arm, whereas Cain's was below-average. Sound familiar?
IIRC back in 2014, the Royals often brought Dyson into the game for defensive purposes, moving Cain to right field when they did so. Given Cain's poorer throwing arm, the Royals must have felt that Dyson was clearly the rangier fielder.
According to Fan Graphs, both players have maintained their high speed ratings well. Dyson is nearly two years older than Dyson, but Jarrod has the higher speed rating. Both players are very good in that regard though.
Dyson will be a free agent, but he played in only 111 games for the Mariners, in part due to injury and likely would be available in trade at a reasonable cost. On the other hand, like Denard Span, he's a lefty-hitting platoon player, whereas the right-handed hitting Cain hit both righties and lefties well last season.
If the Giants are as serious about fielding in center as they indicate, Cain would make a good candidate, as Boagie stated and Boly reiterated. Dyson might make a decent consolation prize if necessary, although he would need to be complemented by a right-handed hitting center fielder.
If the Giants truly feel they can be competitive in 2018, either of these free agents -- or even both -- could make sense. But if they wish to build for the future, clearly these older players aren't the guys. An inexpensive guy like Dyson though might make for a decent complement should the Giants wish to ease Steven Duggar into the position.
