I really don't know what to say about Cain retiring.
First I will tell you that I have never been interested in jerseys with a players name on the back, I think it's kind of silly to be honest. I have had only one in my 30 years of being a Giants fan. Having a Matt Cain jersey didn't seem as silly because his tenure as a Giant reminded me a lot of what we've all been through as fans, and what we come to expect from our guys - battling through the tough times and quiet professionalism during the good times. He set the tone. That's why among my numerous Giants Jerseys only one name appears on the back of any of them, and that's "Cain."
In 2009 I got a puppy and if you've ever had a pet, which I'm sure most of you've had, you'll know it's not always easy to decide on a name. I thought long and hard about it, and finally picked a name. He doesn't exactly exemplify "quiet professionalism" but he's been there beside me for every game, and every championship. Cain is now 9 years old and entering the senior years of his life, and he will again be there on Saturday, watching his namesake pitch the final game of his career.
A sad day for Giants fans, and a sadder day for what some of us have become, Matt Cain fans. For me Cain is a true Giant because he is much like what we feel about ourselves, overworked and underappreciated. He doesn't want the spotlight, he just wants to win. He is the perfect example of what we expect out of our sports stars.
I didn't think it was a good idea to give Cain a start as his sendoff, I thought it would be better to just bring him in for a batter or two and let the fans give him his ovation. But that's not Matt Cain.

But that's not Matt Cain. Rog -- Wow, Boagie! You said so much there I am in awe. Your first sentence was right on. And then your last five words were sublime. I know we all sure hope that Matt can reach into his bag of tricks one more time. It would be so nice if he could go out with a good game. But even if he pitches a good game, I wouldn't expect him to get the win. Sadly, due to a lack of support by his Giants hitters, that's not Matt Cain either. What could be more typical Matt Cain than to pitch a good game, yet not get the win? Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/4079/matt-cain#ixzz4u0RBkUkh

I guess I'm the dissenting vote.
I LOVE what the Giants are doing, and I absolutely LOVE that they are doing it on Saturday and Not Sunday.
IF we were in the race, I might feel differently.
But we're not.
Matt never got run support, but he NEVER said a word, nor did he throw his teammates under the bus for not scoring for him.
104 wins is atrocious for as well as he pitched.
Atrocious and UN excusable.
He's a starter.
He has EARNED the right to one more start, and I can't applaud Bochy and management enough for what they are doing.
One batter?
One?
Just for the applause?
If I'm Cain, I'm insulted beyond belief.

Although, even if he does, he's had a great career. One could argue that only Marichal and Perry have been a better pitcher for the SF Giants than Matt. I'm glad people aren't paying as much attention to pitcher wins and losses now. Wouldn't it be awful if people remember Matt for his losing record? Just for the applause?
Rog -- No matter how long Matt pitches, he's pitching just for the applause. This isn't about Matt Cain circa 2017. It's about Matt Cain, career Giant.

I think you missed the context of my post, Boly. I wasn't saying it's not a good idea to run Cain out there for a start. What I mean is it COULD backfire because the worst thing that could happen on Saturday is for Matt Cain to get shelled, but Cain's demeanor and his legacy as a Giant demands him to finish off his career as a starting pitcher.

You're right, boagie, I TOTALLY missed the point.
My apologies.
It certainly could back fire, but I think all of us are praying that it will not.
My prayer is that Cain gives them a darned good 5, leaves with a decent lead, the bullpen shuts down the Padres, and Cain walks away with a win in that last start.

Boagie- I think from a fan's standpoint you are correct. It doesn't matter if he doesn't even get an out, he will still get cheered and they will still love him. But Cain is not built that way. Despite what many think, Matt Cain is not a softy, he's an asshole. Prior to yesterday, the only time he tipped his cap to ANY fans is when he tipped his cap to the N.Y. fans after drilling David Wright in the head. He pitches to win, not for the cheers.

I have nothing but reverence for Cain and what he did for us during our glory years. He was aptly named the horse and to cast him away with a one batter token appearance would be an insult. He deserves to take the hill and battle for as long as he can as he always has done. What could it hurt in this stinker of a season?

And by the way Rog, for you to refer to him as an A-hole makes you the A-hole.

That was me not Rog, and he is an ass. He would drill YOU in the head if it meant winning the game. He's a hard nosed competitor. He's not this cuddly bear that doesn't mind if he gets shelled even in his final appearance. That's my one hesitation with letting him start, if he doesn't do well it won't be a happy moment for him.

I've seen Matt drill many a hitter over the years. I've NEVER seen him intentionally go for the head. When he does hit someone in the coconut, he immediately feels bad about it, as do 99.9% of pitchers. That time in NY, he was deriding the fans who thought he intentionally beaned Wright.
I have no idea whether Matt is cuddly and nice in person, and I really could care less. He gave his all every time he toed the rubber which is everything we as fans have a right to expect.

Madison Bumgarner and Tim Lincecum have been viewed as postseason heroes, but Matt's 2010 postseason may have been better than any of them. Even though Tim deservedly was voted the MVP of the postseason and would have won it for the World Series if not for the timeliness of Renteria's series-winning homer, Matt pitched even better. In three postseason starts, he gave up nary an earned run.

What a great way for Matt to go out. Our fears were avoided.
