The Giants have now lost the most games of any major league team -- by two games. They are tied with the Phillies with 57 wins. The Giants have more losses, with 91 to 89 for the Phillies.
The Phillies have been helped tremendously by the call up of Rhys Hoskins (18 homers in 34 games), while the next team in line -- the White Sox at 59-89 -- have been aided by calling up Yoan Moncada and hot utility player Nick Delmonico, as well as the improved play of second-year shortstop Tim Anderson.
Long way to go, but things are looking up for getting the first overall draft pick. I have no idea who that might be, but last year's first overall pick was considered one of the top prospects both as a pitcher and as a hitter.
Speaking of pitcher/hitters, Shohei Otani of Japan will be making himself available to MLB teams this fall. Otani is both a top pitcher and top hitter in Japan. I'm not sure, but I think the Giants may have spent too much international money to compete for Otani. I hope not.
The top draft pick, Otani and perhaps a trade and another free agent or two could make the Giants relevant again quite quickly. But talent to trade remains an obstacle, as particularly does the budget. What the Giants truly need is a big increase in the budget. Or possibly to trade away one of their two superstars for a ton of talent.
How about some combination of ALL those things? By the way, Buster is the superstar who would free up the most money. Star Johnny Cueto would be next, followed by Jeff Samardzija, Brandon Belt and Hunter Pence, none of whom are big stars at this point.
