at this point I am truly perplexed.
The flush down the toilet is almost complete, and we're auditioning players for next year.
So will someone please tell me why in the freaking world Hunter is still in the lineup?
We need to see IF Montcreif can play... so for crying out loud, Bochy! Play him!
My patience with you, bochy is near the end of my limit.
If this truly IS an audition, then MAKE it one.
Sit Hunter, especially when Slaton returns.

First of all, it's highly unlikely that Moncrief can play at a starting level. He's got some tools, but he never has shown he can hit at any level. .255 career minor league batting average. .768 career minor league OPS. This season in AAA was one of his better ones, but his .287/770 compares in comparison to the much younger Arroyo and Jones, and we see how well they have hit in the majors. So while it's exciting to imagine what Carlos might do, he's almost certain to be a disappointment. His CEILING is almost certainly as a 4th or 5th outfielder -- on a bad team.
The guy's going to turn 29 in two months. Haven't we seen enough of these older non-prospects?
Second, the biggest advantage the Giants could get from right field at this point is a red-hot September from Hunter, possibly allowing the Giants to include him in a trade for a younger player. Hunter had an .828 OPS in August. Increase that by 100 points in September (He's off to a slow start, but it's still possible), and he might have a bit of trade value if the Giants ate some salary.
In other words, there is limited upside to playing Moncrief. The best chance for upside is to play Hunter and hope for a miracle.
The name Moncrief was great in basketball. In baseball, it may well be a Four A name at best.

And we just DFA'd him.
Thing is, Roger, after watching Hunter all year long, I wonder about his eye sight!
Seriously.
I'm no longer sure he's seeing the ball well at all.

I too have wondered about Hunter's eyesight since early in the season when he seemed to have a hard time seeing the ball in the outfield. Perhaps it was a sun issue back then, but I don't recall it that way.
One good sign is that his strikeout and swinging strike rates are down from last season.

I wasn't even thinking about his defense, Rog, but you are correct. THAT hasn't been particularly good either.
When was the last time you saw Hunter hit a monstrous HR?
Last year in Arizona is the last I can remember.
He simply hasn't lifted and launched as he has in the past.
His swing has always been awkward, but this year... THIS year he seems fooled multiple times almost every at bat, frequently not even making contact.
And worse, for me, is the number of pitches that he chases UP and out of the strike zone.
He's always been terrible on the breaking ball when he's in one of his funks.
But this year... it's been a year long funk.
