Huh.
So THAT'S what a real defensive CF looks like!
That was impressive.
Too bad Bumgarner had a bad day.
If Span had been out there, or anyone else on our club, the final score likely would have been 12 or 13 to 3.
He might never hit about .260, but IF we can get some bats that can actually drive in some runs, and pitchers who can keep the ball in the park, Gorkys might be the man for the job next year.
Hit him 8th, utilize his speed in that spot, and get a banger or 2 and it might work.
Yeah.
Sure.
Like we're going to get even one banger.

Those were all nice plays, but two of those plays were ones that a really good centerfielder would have made routinely. I like Gorky's as a backup, I think we should aim a little higher for a starting centerfielder next season.

And boagie, I totally agree.
But I don't think we're going to be able to come up with one.
Why?
First of all, finances. We just don't have the money after paying the guys we already have.
Cain comes off the books
Plus, who wants to come here?

I'm not sure if players would want to come here, but I'd like to see them pursue Lorenzo Cain.

Me, too.
Thing is, as Kruk and Kuip and the guys on the pre game point out, big boppers don't want to come to a place where they can "bop," and not get a payoff.
I'm not sure how we can pull a trade or a FA signing off.
I'd hate to move Panik in a deal to get one, I'll tell you that.
to ME...Crawford, Posey and Bum are UN touchables, with Panik a heartbeat behind.
Everyone one else is on the table.
Everyone else.

Great idea to pursue Cain, Boagie. Lorenzo's talents are speed, defense and getting on base, each of which should play well at AT&T. Despite Gorky's great defensive day, center field defense hasn't been well played this season. Lorenzo will turn 32 the first month of next season, so he is likely past his defensive prime too. But not as far past as Denard.
I think we all agree that the Giants' best shot at a power hitter is via trade. Maybe if they could sign Lorenzo and trade for a power hitter, they could then fill in the other outfield spot between Denard, Hunter and as a defensive replacement, Gorkys. They also have Slater and a couple more outfielders who could be up within a year or two.
Bobby's Evans' chore this winter is further complicated by:
. As usual, the budget.
. The likely untradeability of Span and Pence, who will take up something like $30 million in salary in 2018.
. The questions surrounding Brandon Belt's healthy, should they wish to trade him for a power hitter and hope Chris Shaw or Ryder Jones can provide power at first base.
. The lack of certainty that even Christian Arroyo among the young guys can be a significant asset in 2018, although his chances seem decent to good.
I mean, really, where would we even begin if we were Evans? As they stand, the Giants could be anywhere between a good team to one as bad as they have been this season.
As an example, remember a year and a half ago when the Giants had arguably the best defensive infield in the majors and likely one of the best overall? Now Belt's health is a huge question mark. Panik might be settling in at a level clearly lower than we were expecting. With his recent rebound, Crawford is still performing well, but is his decline in the field something temporary or the begin of a bigger decline? Nothing to worry about now, but how about a couple of years from now?
And third base? The obvious answer is Arroyo, but Christian clearly wasn't ready, and injury robbed him of his chance to bounce back. As mentioned before, he will play winter ball in the Dominican, which could help catch his development time up. Clearly he wasn't as ready as he looked at AAA.
A little bit of a hidden positive: If he has a platoon partner and defensive replacment (Gorkys? Hunter?), Denard has hit a decent .280/.795 against right-handers this season. Maybe just stick Denard and Hunter in left and get a decent player from between the two of them.
Here's a huge question that was asked last week by Kevin Frandsen: The idea is that the Giants are one of the few teams who could afford Giancarlo Stanton's contract, which the Marlins are said to be looking to trade. The players mentioned were Christian Arroyo, Tyler Beede, Ty Blach, Chris Stratton and Joe Panik.
Which players would we give up for Stanton? Giancarlo is owed a minimum of $295 million through 2027, with an option for a net $15 million in 2028. Stanton is 28, so he would reasonably have at least five peak seasons remaining. His problem hasn't been producing; it's been staying healthy.
