Shawn Estes was speculating the other night about what is really obvious; We need a power hitting outfielder for next season.
He believed our best piece to trade is Joe Panik, and I don't disagree.
I wouldn't do it, but I don't disagree.
It's my opinion that he's using faulty logic.
What team is going to move a power hitting player capable of hitting 20+ HRs for a middle infielder likely to hit between 10-15 HRS IF....IF he can stay healthy for a full season?
To date, the most games Joe has ever played is 127.
My response is, "not many, if any."
Both Shawn and Matt Williams agreed that Panik does SO MANY INTANGIBLE things well, that moving Joe might not be the best move.
Shawn believes, and I agree, that Joe is one of the better hitters on the team.
Doesn't have the power of Posey, but he's close to being as good a hitter.
Both Matt and Shawn also agreed that it is highly UNLIKELY that ANY FA power guy would sign with the Giants because of having to hit at AT&T.
Both Matt and Shawn also were in agreement that though the Giants have bodies who "could replace" Joe, the production both at the plate and in the field simply wouldn't be the same.
The names they used were Arroyo, Miguel Gomez and Tomlinson; the obvious choices. I like all three, but Gold Glove quality?
I don't think so, especially not in the case of Gomez where reports are, "where does he play?"
He's a converted catcher, is what I heard, who is a defensive liability, but a guy who can really hit.
So, how DO we come up with 'that guy?'
I don't think I have an answer.
Span won't bring that much, and neither will the oft injured, never having reached his potential, Brandon Belt.
Neither will the rapidly declining Hunter Pence.
Minor leaguers?
Who?
We don't have ANY 'can't miss' prospects to entice other GMs.
Some good ones, Beede, Duggar, Slater and Reynolds, but none are "can't miss."
Off our current roster?
Not Crawford.
Not Posey.
Certainly not Bum.
Can't build a team around hitting and defense and trade away either.
That's why, for ME, Panik stays.
I think we're between a rock, and the proverbial hard place.
Haven't got the money, nor the ball park to GET a big bat, nor do we have the players to move.
Latest rumor has Upton coming here.
He's got the power, for sure, I just don't like him, or the attitude or the brooding I've read about.
Like I said: between a rock, and the proverbial hard place.
Unless Dugger, Reynolds or Slater bloom, and bloom quickly, we're screwed for a number of years.
A very, very discouraged,
boly
