I've heard or read Andy Baggarly, SFMeasageboard.Proboards.Com irregular Grant Brisbee and Brian Kenny in the last 18 hours, and each had something enlightening to say about how the Giants will or should proceed.
Baggarly by far the most, indicating that for various reasons the Giants would trade Cueto (Yankees), Nunez (Red Sox as a replacement for Pablo Sandoval, ark, ark) Hundley (Diamondbacks), Gearrin (Nationals) and Kontos (Twins). He said he believed Belt would stay put, but add the words "for now" and suggesting a talk of Christian Yelich (his idea) and some dead money. That quintet isn't likely to bring back a lot. Cueto would be the most valuable commodity, and if he continues to pitch as he did in his last outing, he could bring back some real -- not great, but real -- value.
Brisbee said that the Giants will likely try again without making major moves, citing that they tried that approach in 2014 and it worked out nicely. Brisbee himself was scared to death of that approach, mentioning that it would be tough for the Giants to get back to that level in the next year or two.
Kenny wasn't speaking about the Giants directly, but in his book he recommends NEVER giving out a contract over $100 million for a free agent. The Giants have done that only twice of course, but the overall results haven't been good. Barry Zito wasn 't a disaster, but he was indeed a disfunction. Johnny Cueto was great last season, but now has the Giants digging him out of a hole to trade him with his opt-out clause.
So it sounds as if we're going to see mostly minor moves (if one considers that the Giants are likely going to lose Cueto and Nunez anyway). There are good free agents coming, especially a year from now. My recommendation was to go for some second-tier power that might be had on the cheap. Kenny's recommendation is NOT to go big.
It's beginning to look like a year from now we're going to be more or less right back here. Certainly the Giants who are having bad seasons in 2017 could have good ones in 2018 and there could be clear improvement. But the pieces don't appear likely to be there a year from now to knock off the Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Rockies. When Tyler Beede and his 5.11 ERA is your top pitching prospect, your near-term prospects don't look good.
I'd like to be more optimistic, and I'd like to say I have good answers if the Giants DO blow it up to some degree. But I can't, and I don't. Perhaps someone here has a better shovel to dig out with than I do.
For now, let's root for Bumgarner to make a strong return beginning tonight in Sacramento, and for Cueto and Nunez to play well in order to build their trade value to a suitcase filled with big bills rather than big bills on top and small ones underneath.
