Baseball-reference lists the Giants' primary player over the course of the season at each position. With Eduardo Nunez listed at third base, that leaves Chris Marrero in left field. Along with Denard Span in center and Hunter Pence in left, the batting average of the primary outfielders at each position is a combined .237. That number will take a sudden jump of 15 points or so when the .405-hitting Austin Slater gains enough plate appearances to become the primary left fielder. That should happen very soon.
And the Giants' primary outfield will finally be hitting .250. The Giants' outfield play has been so bad that Span has been clearly their best outfielder over the course of the season. Yes, that's the same Denard who has just a .527 OPS against southpaws over that span. Fortunately he has faced lefties in only 20% of his at bats. Only five of Span's 40 starts have come against southpaws. Despite the horrible state of the Giants' outfield, Span has become -- get this -- essentially a platoon player.
On the second-worst team in baseball so far this season. The team that has by far the worst outfield of any team. The team that has what is likely the worst outfield in their San Francisco history.
Man, this has been a tough season. The Giants have lost 100 games only once in their 134-year history, but they are precisely on pace to just do it again.
Question: Do we think the Giants will lose 100 games this season? Don't forget the impact of the trade deadline, where the Giants will almost certainly be net sellers.
