Is there more to come? Is there more going on behind the scenes?
With the promotion of Slater, and Shaw sitting at AAA, based upon the article on the Giant website today, my post from yesterday may soon becoming reality.
Although they said Crawford and Posey were the only untouchables, I would like to think that Bum and Panik are untouchable, too.
No team in baseball can boast what we boast defensively, up the middle.
At least we aren't standing pat, sitting on our hands and waiting for these clowns to get it together.
This also might be a subtle wake up call for our offense.
"Not doing well? Better pull your collective heads out of your fannies cause you could be outta here tomorrow!"
We'll see.

I read the Chris Haft article you referred to. I respect Chris as a very solid Giants writer and of course he is sometimes privvy to information we're not, but I agree with you that Madison Bumgarner is almost certainly untouchable. Madison is something like 22 years old, and he's on an extremely club-friendly contract.
Haft did a nice job of identifying the Johnny Cueto conundrum (although he didn't mention Mark Melancon, who is in the same situation a year later). I didn't agree with his assessment that Brandon Belt would be difficult to trade because of his contract, which is relatively team-friendly itself. As he mentioned, Brandon can veto trades to 10 teams.
Without specifically mentioning them, he implied that Hunter Pence and especially Denard Span may be untradeable. Pence's contract expires at the end of the 2018 season, and the Giants have an option on Span's contract at that time as well.
He didn't mention Eduardo Nunez, but as we have discussed here, he seems primed to trade before the deadline. Eduardo is also eligible for free agency at the end of this season. If the Giants are going to keep Belt, Shaw would seem to be a good trading chip. He's not a blue chip prospect, but he's an intriguing one. The Giants have been trying him the outfield, but it seems unlikely he has the speed to prosper there.
As for the call up of Slater sending a message, really? Don't we think the players already understand the situaton? IMO bringing up Slater sends less of a message than calling up Calixte earlier in the week. Slater is considered a prospect. Calixte is considered a stop gap. If they're calling up a stop gap who can play all around the diamond, that would seem more threatening to me than making a more natural call up of a prospering prospect.
Like you, I would like to see the Giants hang on to Joe Panik. That said, Joe has disappointed me very much the past season and a third. Last season I thought he was unlucky, but the longer his slump goes on, the less likely that seems.
In general though, I would expect the Giants to hang on to most if not all of their core and to emphasize keeping younger players while dealing older players and/or prospects. I think the Giants will look at the situation more as retooling than rebuilding.
They will want to bounce back as quickly as possible without giving up their future.

That's not the impression I got, Rog. Not at all.

Couldn't disagree more.
If you watched the pre game show today, Richie had NOTHING positive to say about Shaw. Called him a 1B man and a DH. And, he pointed out, not many DH's in the NL.
He's not even an intriguing chip if I'm a GM.
I'f I'm a GM, I want Belt.
