There simply has GOT to be a better option for our bullpen than this guy!
There has to be!
This makes 2 straight outtings where he's gotten hammered.
Unforgivable, giving up that many runs to THOSE morons!
Just looking at the numbers, and knowing nothing about them at all, Kraig Sitton and Tyler Rogers seem more deserving than this jack ass!
Now lets talk about Drew Stubbs.
Seriously?
Seriously?
This guy makes Gorkys look like a good hitter!
Many of ya'all have been clamoring for Slaton, well... you can now put me in that boat with you.

I'm not going to defend Stubbs' hitting but the guy CAN play CF and has speed. The fact is neither Hernandez nor Stubbs was supposed to be our starting CF this year. It's enough to have a guy who can make the plays on defense, and the guy I'm more comfortable with is Stubbs. Hopefully Span gets back. Slater is unproven. He's not coming up until the season is completely lost. Slater is NO Christian Arroyo.

No question, Randy, the guy can go get 'em out there.
But Stubbs has always been an awful hitter, and this year, to my eye, he looks even worse.
What I don't understand about him is why he doesn't try to bunt for hits more often.
And even more important than that, why doesn't he shorten up that long, long swing of his?
One would think a professional with HIS terrible numbers would try something different.
Guess not.
Guess stubborn isn't limited to Jeffy.

One thing we might not want to forget about Christian Arroyo is that he's hitting .207. That's after hitting about .450 in Sacramento. Austin Slater is hitting .280.
I think Slater can become a fourth outfielder, but as Randy said, he's still a bit raw. Slater has played mostly left field this season and through the end of last season had played only 51 games in center.

Slater? When do you see this happening, Rog?
After watching Stubbs bumble and stumble around, I'm in for just about anything different.

Slater and Stubbs may fit different needs. Stubbs can play center field. Slater probably can too, but he has little experience.
If we see Slater playing center field for the River Cats, we know the Giants are considering him as a possible center field presence. For now it's Stubbs and Gorkys.
Austin did start in center last night, although he was moved to left later in the game. Austin can likely hit at least as well as Stubbs right now, but they would be giving up defense. Plus, the Giants probably don't want to rush Austin. Christian Arroyo has been a breath of fresh air, but he was hitting just .207 entering last night's game, and he's still at just .250 with a .710 OPS. He's been a decent hitter -- for a shortstop. For a third baseman, not so much.
Melvin Upton looked like by far the best solution for center field. Now he's gone for quite a while. Slater could well be the ultimate answer to complement Denard Span, but he's raw and inexperienced in center field.
The Giants reacted quickly when Jarrett Parker went down with his broken clavicle. But there wasn't a lot available, and the injury to Upton cut off easily the best option IMO.
Mac Williamson is back, but neither he nor Justin Ruggiano is hitting. If Justin begins hitting, possibly he could play a good enough center field to help there.
Two things I wonder here:
. Why didn't we see how big a problem the outfield could become?
. Why didn't the Giants have Eduardo Nunez working out in the outfield, including center field?

I'd like to see Morse in LF with Nunez as a defensive replacement later in the game.

Baggs has said that the player the Giants like in the minors isn't Slater, it's Chris Shaw, who's still at AA. I don't think I've ever seen this many players on the roster that shouldn't be in the major leagues. Ramirez is finally gone, Stratton has now joined him, and I'm waiting on Stubbs, Gorkys, Hill and sorry guys, but Morse too. Morse is a DH at best

Morse will likely stay with us as a PH once everyone gets back.
But it'll be a while before we have other options.
He can spell Belt at 1B and PH.
I still like his bat.

Regarding Morse, here's something to ponder. He actually came up to the majors as a shortstop. Hard to believe, isn't it? Rog -- I guess in the context of your reply, my point would be that Christian Arroyo isn't Willie Mays. The actual point I was making though is that the guy we were getting so excited about was hitting .207. He had certainly helped, but we might have been getting a little over-excited about him. Christian appears to be a nice prospect, but he has his flaws, the primary one being that when he's not hitting, he's not getting on base at all. As much as we criticize Brandon Belt, when he's not hitting, he's making only two or three outs instead of three or four. Christian will make three or four -- at least until he is more successful in looking for pitches he can drive instead of hitting fair balls on pitches he might better be taking. I'm not necessarily talking about bad balls. I'm simply saying again that Christian is sometimes guilty of making too much quantity contact instead of quality contact. I would say that's a much better "problem" to have than a guy who strikes out all the time. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3836/ramirez?page=1#ixzz4g2TMix4a

Morse is OK being used as Boly has said, but on a top-notch team -- well, he wouldn't be on a top-notch team, as Mark said. Actually, Mark said because of his poor fielding, he was better suited to being a DH. But I don't think he his truly a good enough hitter at this stage of his career to be a designated hitter.
Shaw has shown power in the minors, but I believe he is rather slow. He's playing some outfield now, so I'm sure the Giants are evaluating. Shaw is hitting .278 for AA Richmond with three home runs. The best thing about his hitting is that he has 12 walks compared to 12 strikeouts (in 72 at bats). He's showing plate control. I can see why they're getting excited.
I hate to continue to rub it in to Randy, but as I've posted many times before, Chris was drafted with the compensatory pick the Giants received from Boston when the Red Sox signed Pablo Sandoval. Their desire to re-sign Pablo is probably the biggest mistake the Giants have made in recent years, and only Pablo saved them from it.
I suspect the Giants learned from the situation though that they need to be a little more astute in which players on their roster they should re-sign. They have done a good job of maintaining chemistry by doing so, but probably half their high-priced free agents didn't work out. Probably more than half, actually.
Zack Greinke also saved the Giants a bit. Same with James Shields.

Weird season at the bat for Eduardo Nunez. He's struck only about half as often as even Joe Panik, but his line drives are down a little, and his hard-hit balls have plummeted. He's also hitting more grounders. He's also walking even less than usual. Not entirely sure what to make of it.
