We've fantasized here about what it would be like to have the luxury of having three catchers on the roster. That wasn't enough for the Padres as they set their 25-man roster today. Incredibly, they're carrying four. Not surprisingly, there are special circumstances.
The starter is Austin Hedges, their top catching prospect for a while. Hedges has long had a good glove, and he's not hitting well enough to be the top man. Then there's the familiar Hector Sanchez. Catcher #3 is Luis Torrens, a Rule V pickup they need to keep in the majors this season in order to avoid losing him. Finally, there's Christian Bethancourt, whom they can afford to carry because he can also pitch out of the bullpen.
Four catchers ... Wouldn't that be a luxury?
