Now that a top closer has been signed, a power-hitting outfielder might be considered the next need. And there is still plenty of power available on the free agent market, including two of the three reigning home run leaders. The cost, even in a down market for power hitters? Defense. And then there's the salary budget, which the Giants appear to have hit, once again entering luxury tax territory. But it's sad to see one of the Giants' biggest needs becoming arguably the most undervalued commodity on the market. Perhaps some power could still fall through the cracks to the Giants on at no higher than a weakside platoon contract. The Giants will likely add someone, although it could be only an outfield Jimmy Rollins type of player. I'm guessing Adam Duvall isn't available!

Speaking of Duvall, his development has placed the Mike Leake trade into the realm of the Carlos Beltran trade. Another good player acquired at (now) significant cost, where the value of the acquisition was vastly eroded by injury.
Looking back and combining another post, was the A.J. Pierzynski trade the beginning of the demise of the strong Giants teams of that era?

Rog, no one, and I mean, NO ONE, saw this coming.
I wrote off Duvall for multiple reasons, not the least of which was his apparent INABILITY to make consistent contact.

As you know, I put a lot of emphasis on strikeouts to walks to power. The only thing I can see is that Adam hit a homer every 17.8 at bats in the minors. Thats an excellent rate, and I may not have given him enough credit for it. If he declines noticeably this season, extending his decline of last season's second half, I may have evaluated him correctly. If he continues at last season's level, I simply blew it, and need to learn from it.
One aside: Last season MLB set a record for homers hit in a single season, higher even than the steroid years. Could it be that ball park conditions were more conducive than usual to the home run last season? I don't know the answer; it's simply a thought. I do know that AT&T played as far less a pitchers' park in 2016, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything in this context.
