If tonight's game hasn't already woken you up, Rip, I'll wake you up myself.
You've been filling our heads with all kinds of crap about Will Smith. Apparently you have missed the past month in which he has pitgched 11.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and five walks, striking out 17, and earning nine holds. In fact, as his role has improved, Will has nine holds in his last 10 games.
Given that you were sleeping though, I can see how you missed it. What time would you like your wake up call, sir?

Oh, two saves in three nights for Sergio too.

It doesn't undo all the damage done. We aren't back in first place in the division and our position in the Wild Card race is tenuous at best.
Too little, too late.

No question things are tenuous. I'd feel comfortable with six out of nine, but even that wouldn't be a sure thing. Five out of nine is a real maybe.
Of course the Giants have yet to win six out of nine games since the All-Star game, and they only recently won five out of nine for the first time since the break.
Oh, and are Johnny Cueto and Brandon Crawford any good? They haven't had a chance to be since they got injured. I guess the over/under for starts by Johnny would be one. If he can come back next Tuedsay, he can make it two, but as Boly pointed out, it can easily take two or more weeks to come back from a groin strain, and that would mean none.
Best case, think of four strong starters (all that are needed for the postseason) and a lineup that can actually score runs, which I believe it could do at one time, although as I age I'm not sure my memory stretches that far back.
Speaking of memory, surely ours goes back as far as August 18th, when Will Smith last gave up an earned run. Certainly it goes back as far as two or three days ago, when Will was last cast into the Brandon Belt memorial garbage can. Sergio Romo is giving strong sings as a closer, and I really like Derek Law, although I'm certainly glad Derek had an extra run to work with last night.
One last "positive" thought for today. It's always possible either the Cardinals or Mets go into a funk these last 10 days of the season.
In the event of a three-way playoff, Team A meets Team B, in a winner take all. The loser of that game then travels to Team C for sudden death. A team could burn as many as two starting pitchers while getting into the Wild Card game, which could use up a third. That might mean having to use a fifth starter along the way. Amazingly though, Albert Suarez has yet to yield more than three runs in any of his 11 starts.
Think what odds we could have gotten going into the season that Albert Suarez would make at least a baker's dozen starts for the Giants. If the Giants make the postseason, he's just an injury away from pitching there too.

As for too little, too late -- not yet. We don't want to be like 2014 -- too doubtful, too early; too stupid, soon; too foolish, too often.

Dood - I remember him giving up 6 earned runs before he pitched 5 innings as a Giant

I see. Overall, Will has pitched decently as a Giant -- far too decently to throw him in the Brandon Belt memorial trash can. We often get too hyped up when the Giants are playing well, and too depressed when they aren't. Same thing with our feelings toward individual players. Boagie- Rental players we give up a lot for don't have the luxury of "balancing out." They are brought here for a reason, and that's to perform at a high level. If we had time to let someone get comfortable we'd just call someone up from AAA. You never seem to understand that.
