If you haven't noticed, I've been quiet. I've been really busy and haven't had much time to post here. I don't know if I'll have much time to post here in the near future, but I'd like to give my brief opinion on the Giants and decisions that have been made recently.
First off, I've heard many complaints about Sabean over the years from this board, but one thing that Sabean learned after 2011 is that you don't make a trade just to make a trade. Whether Rog or Mark want to admit, trading for Beltran in 2011 was a disaster. I got the same feeling with the deadline deals Evans made this season. Trading Duffy away was a BAD move, a desperate move, when we weren't in a desperate position. Evans so far as a GM has shit the bed. Hopefully he's learning.
Secondly, I'm done with Denard Span. I'm basically done with anyone who doesn't already have a world series ring, with one exception, Kelby Tomlinson. They don't know how to win when they need to, and it shows.
I've been told on this board that whenever I support an aging veteran that was good from 2010 to 2014 that I'm just being sentimental. You might be right, but right now I'd take Lincecum, Vogelsong, Duffy and Affeldt over Samardzija, Moore, Nunez and Smith. Say what you will, but our guys knew how to win, these guys shit the bed.
I'm still optimistic. I still think there's enough Posey's, Panik's, Crawford's and Bumgarner's to right the ship and balance out the lackadaisical performances of Evans' free agent and trade acquisitions.
Finally, after tonight, Tomlinson starts. I don't care that he's not a big name, or he's not a seasoned veteran on teams that choke in the playoffs, or never make it there like the growing number of players now disgracing the jersey.
Tonight Tomlinson was the man, while the rest have been little boys over the last 2 months. Tomlinson grinds at bats, he chokes up and makes contact. He's a pest. I like that. That might not get you a big contract, but it wins games. We saw that tonight.

Whether Rog or Mark want to admit, trading for Beltran in 2011 was a disaster. Rog -- Of course it was. Neither Mark nor I will dispute the truth. But it was a disaster because Beltran got hurt and because the rest of the team didn't play very well after the trade. The only thing that has made it less of a disaster is that Zack Wheeler hurt his arm. What Mark and I disagree with you on is when you say Beltran "shit the bed" for the Giants. I realize he wasn't great at driving in runs, but it's pretty tough to say that a guy who hit .323/.920 played poorly. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3480/quiet#ixzz4JYZsN6r8

You're talking about a guy who is in the minors, a guy who is having a surprisingly good year (in a small sample), a guy who is having a down year, and a guy who is retired. By the way, it's a small sample, but Matt actually has a slightly lower OPS with the Rays than with the Giants. By the way, Matt was scratched today because of a flare up of his Achilles. the lackadaisical performances of Evans' free agent and trade acquisitions. Rog -- All has not been great, but Cueto, Samardzija, Span, Moore, Smith and Nunez have combined for 7 Wins Above Replacement. That means the Giants would likely be below .500 and virtually out of even the Wild Card race without them. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3480/quiet#ixzz4JYdpfNUv

Boagie- If we replaced each player with the average minor leaguer I suppose you're right. But being only 7 games better than the average minor league replacement is not acceptable after all the money and prospects we've dumped to acquire this group.

Cueto has been fine, and Samardzija has been decent. Span has been disappointing. The other three have been short on both performance and time, with Smith being particularly disappointing thus far.

Rog -- You make a good point here, Don. In actuality though, Matt's hitting since the injury has been about the same as it was prior to being hurt. Sadly, Matt has just been shut down for the season, although from a medical standpoint I suspect it's a very good idea and an indication that Matt's injury was worse than originally thought. The injury I feared most was the Achilles, and while the one surgery I've had was for bone spurs, the doctor told me that since the surgery went in through the Achilles, it was in some ways similar to the surgery for an Achilles tear. I know I was quite careful with my Achilles for a long time after the surgery. Hopefully Matt won't require surgery and will bounce back strongly from the injury. One thing neither of us mentioned was that prior to the injury, Matt was beginning to bounce back a bit from his very slow start.

Rog makes a great point. I was not shocked nor too worried when Matt got off to a slow start and I expect he'll have a fine career. I was sad to see him go, but I like what Ive seen from Moore thus far.

I agree, Randy.
When you have a chance to get someone with the arm, and stuff of Matt Moore. Man!
You 'gots' to jump on it.
And Nunez is a HUGE defensive upgrade over a guy that was a really GOOD defender!

Rog -- I was comparing the entire group. I think by far the biggest advantage is Cueto and Samardzija over Lincecum and Vogelsong. Nunez is a HUGE defensive upgrade over a guy that was a really GOOD defender! Rog -- What is weird is that after his first few games, we were ready to send Nunez back to Little League to work on his fielding. Now we think he's better than he probably is. All I myself can say at this point is that they both appear to be good. I don't see Nunez as a HUGE upgrade, and perhaps not an upgrade at all. It does appear that third base is becoming by far Nunez's position. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3480/quiet#ixzz4K6SE1eEp
