We score 5 runs... again, and can't win.
You've got to be kidding me.
I saw some of the highlights... One of the things Affeldt pointed out in the pregame show was the best way NOT to get Adrian out... pitch him away... so what did Bumgarner do?
If you guessed, "pitch him away," you'd be right.
Madison? Where in the world is the real Madison Bumgarner?

I have no problem with Bumgarner going off script to get a good hitter out because he is an elite ace and he gets great hitters out regularly using a variety of pitches and locations. The problem is he wasnt executing his pitches, missing out over the middle...AND (and this is important) the Dodgers weren't missing any mistakes. The last two games in Cincy got the Dodgers hot and they remained so last night. It's now up to Cueto to stop them.

Randy, I get what you're saying.
But name the last time, THIS LATE IN THE SEASON, Bumgarner got lit up like this in back-to-back games?
This is supposed to be HIS time of year...
But he's been hit and miss.
And in the last 2 starts... miss.
You score 5 runs, you should win 90% of the time.
We score 5 runs and aren't winning nearly enough!
Bum has NOT been sharp since but once or twice in recent history. That's not him.
I contend there is something wrong. Fatigue, or what ever, but he has NOT BEEN his dominant self.

As the saying goes...--it happens. Just because it hadn't yet happened to Bum doesn't mean it will continue to happen. It has always been so that even elite aces can get lit up by a hot lineup if they miss location. It would shock me if Bum didn't come up huge in his next start. The poor overall play of the team this last month sort of forced Bochy to not give Bum an extra day of rest and instead skip Cain's turn in the rotation. The bullpen and the poor run support are the cause of our current ills.

Randy, I absolutely love, and truly envy your optimism!
I really, really do!
I wish I had a heavy dose.
It's just that I see more problems going on than just one or two.
We're in the stretch drive now, and rather than things coming together, they are falling apart; and falling apart in a multitude of areas.
And historically, based upon my observations, teams that are GOING to win... have things fall in place.
On the flip side is, teams that AREN'T going to win... don't have things falling in place.
Problems develop.
Slumps begin
Balls don't fall in.
And that's where I see us right now.

I have mentioned my concern with the major league leading number of pitches Madison has thrown. As a counterpoint, prior to these past two outings, his ERA was 1.93 over his previous eight starts.

The Giants have been struggling mightily since the All-Star game. They still have plenty of time to right the ship. It's time for concern, perhaps even worry. But certainly not for hair-pulling.
Let's give a Mulligan to Boly though. He'll usually be a step or two ahead of most of the rest of us.

By the way, Boly is simply an exaggerated version of the rest of us. Remember early in the season when he said this was the best San Francisco Giants team we had seen? Now he's worried almost literally out of his mind.
It's truly hard to remember that almost always when the Giants are going really well, they're not as good as they seem. And when they're struggling mightily, they're not really that bad. As fans, it's tough not to go overboard -- in either direction.

Boly truly would like to take a more moderate approach, but as he's done a great job of explaining to us, he's just not wired that way. I'm trying to remember that there are more than one side to a story and that Boly will usually be on the edge with the side he chooses. Actually, I shouldn't say he chooses that side. It's more like it chooses him. Boly is a high-voltage guy. So where is Mordy now that we need him?

I miss him, too, Randy. I also miss Mark, who barely posts anymore, and boagie. Sing along with me: "Where have you gone, Mark, and boagie, boy, we miss you more than you can know. Woh, woh, woh...." Okay, not my best effort, but the sentiment is there. boly

I think Randy and I are being realistic, not optimistic. In fact, our optimism is fading almost daily. But the Giants were in a similar position in 2014, and we all know how that one turned out. I see our glasses as being not so much rose-colored as focused.
I'm not sure either of us would consider the Giants to be the NL West favorite at this point, but I think we both believe it's at least 50/50 that they make the playoffs.
And it's certainly far too soon to write them off -- or even put our hearts at risk!

Too soon to write them off, Rog?
I disagree.
Baseball certainly isn't predictable, but some facets of the game replay themselves each and every year.
1-Teams that are destined to go to the post season get a lot of breaks; have a lot of good luck down the stretch
2-Teams not destined to go... well, they don't get a lot of breaks, and don't have a lot of good fortune.
Which team are we?
I would believe differently if WE HAD NOT been playing under these circumstances and as we have been since the break.
Nothing has turned our way.
When push comes to proverbial shove, and we NEED some breaks to start and/or continue streak... it doesn't happen.
Line drives continually find leather... as they have since the break.
Bloops fall in against that team at an alarming number and no matter how hard you fight... destiny says, "Sorry, pal. Ain't enough."
That is this Giant team.

One other thing history tells us that if you make it to postseason, anything can happen. That is why I haven't thrown in the towel. We just need guys like Posey, Pence, Panik, Crawford and Span to put together a consistently good month. I feel if they do, it will mean a division title. If two of them have a great month, it will be enough to make the playoffs, most likely.
If the big oaf at 1st base wakes up, that would help too.

After last night, my concern has turned to worry. But, incredibly, the Giants are STILL in Wild Card position. Horrible trend though.
Beginning a week from today, the Giants have four games with the Cardinals at AT&T. Think those games could be important?
The Giants are set up to have their 2nd through 5th starters going against the Cards. They're set up to have their top three starters facing the Dodgers when they play the Bums in LA the following three days. And they're set up to have their top three starters facing the Dodgers at AT&T to end the season.
Those 10 games could be extremely important. And the Giants have Cueto and Moore pitching three each, plus Bumgarner is pitching twice. They've got those key games set up pretty well.
Now if they can just start hitting and closing out games.
