With apologies to CCR..."I see a bad moon a-rising..."
Pagan... Pence, and now Belt.
2 power bats out of the line up.
2 Hamstrings and a sprained ankle.
As Tom Cullen, (Stephan Kings-The Stand) would say: "M O O N, that spells trouble."
Of 8 starters, 3 are now out, and I predict WILL be out for the better part of 2 weeks.
Pence can plead and beg and hope all he wants... but hamstrings do NOT get better in a hurry.
No, they don't.
Same with Belt's ankle.
HE might think he can play.
Bochy will hope he can play...
But for everyone who has TURNED the ankle at that same angle and manner you KNOW it doesn't get better quickly.
And when he does come back, it's going to feel weak... because it will be.
Here's my prediction;
Belt is out 2 weeks.
Pence will be out for at least another week.
At least.
And if either comes back sooner than that... they won't be very effective.
They simply won't.
These next 2 to 3 weeks are really going to test this club and their depth.
If I'm running the club, here's what I do.
1-Parker plays LF almost every day
2-When he's not in LF, Tomlinson is.
3-Tomlinson plays some 1B. This kid can hit.
He might only be average over there, but he's a better hitter than Gillaspie.
4-Posey plays some 1B, too, but for the most part, he stays behind the plate.
I'd rather have Kelby's bat in the line up than either Brown's or Gillaspie's.
I also make a line up change:
Span Panik Tomlinson Posey Crawford Duffy Parker Blanco
Not going to happen, but that's what I'd do.
I'd also run more than we have. Yeah, like you haven't heard me say that before.
But with Kelby AND Span, we have a lot of speed at the top.

Pence will probably be back soon.
Belt's ankle is hard to say. I've twisted my ankle like that a few times, once I was fine a few days later, and once I was out of commission for 3 weeks. It's encouraging that he was able to walk off the field without a noticeable limp.
Pagan, who cares? I like Tomlinson or Parker better in LF. Don't you?

boagie, I've been saying that since Spring Training.
Weren't you one of the ones arguing FOR Angel?
As to Belt's ankle, playing ball in the Air Force I was caught in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd, and rolled my ankle the same way.
I walked off the base paths and finished the game.
But that night? Even after icing it vigorously? I walked with a decided limp.
I could play again in about a week or so... but it was WEAK.
And I wasn't a power hitter.
Wasn't the injury to Belt's left ankle?
The foot off of which he drives?
If I'm wrong, then it's not as bad, but it's still bad.
too many all-of-a-sudden injuries to key players. THAT concerns me.
As I said; "M O O N. That spells trouble.
When Kontos and Romo went down, I wasn't that concerned. It was April and honestly, we needed to see what some kids could do.
We all saw that Law was a blossoming pitcher who just needed innings and experience.
Okert showed some positive signs.
Broadway pitched himself off the roster.
Suarez showed me he could pitch at this level and be the long guy.
When Romo gets activated, who goes down?
Right now, I'd say Strickland.
I thought he'd be the closer THIS year.
Ain't happening any time soon.
Law has been much more effective.

Boagie- I argued for Pagan early in April when he was leading the team in runs scored, average and OBP. That's when you thought he shouldn't be in the lineup, which seemed rather silly to me. You always want to play the hit hand even if you don't think he'll be an impact player all year. But I also know when Pagan gets injured it takes him a long time to get healthy again. So it's time to see what others can do.
I have always backed Parker. I like the power, speed and arm. Rog can vouch for that, we've gone on about Parker a few times. I like Parker, Rog is afraid of Parker's strikeouts.
I did argue for Tomlinson to get playing time in LF before the season started. I felt he should have been used out there during spring training, but he wasn't.
This is part of Bochy that I don't agree with. We've had a few bench players that WANT to get time in at other positions to become a bigger asset to the team and Bochy doesn't allow that to happen until it's forced on him. Then when they go out there they look terrible because they haven't been given the chance to get comfortable there. The next season rolls around and that player doesn't make the team because he is either replaced by a veteran or younger kid who can play the position.
Ishikawa always wanted more time in the outfield and that wasn't granted to him. Because he could only play first base the Giants opted to keep him in AAA despite being one of the better pinch hitters off the bench.
Arias also was open to playing the outfield and wasn't really given the chance except for in emergency situations.
And now Tomlinson is being forced to play a position he isn't used to because Bochy opted to put a stop to him playing the outfield in the instructional league.
I love Bochy, he's the best manager in the game, and it's not even close. But he's also not perfect. His inability to allow bench players to learn other positions and then force them into that position later is not one of his strengths.
That said, I hope Tomlinson continues to get playing time in LF, because I think he has the tools more geared for the outfield. He's got a good arm, and he's fast. And in my opinion, after watching him run back to the dugout after throwing out the runner at the plate today, the look on his face seemed to say "that was fun, I think I found where I belong."

Rog -- I'm with you, Boagie, in that I like to see players learn to play as many positions as they can -- especially players who may be destined for a backup role. Don takes the opposite position, criticizing the Giants for playing their young players at multiple positions, not allowing them to play long enough at one position to learn it properly. One thing about playing multiple positions is that if a player wants to take balls at a position, I think the coaches will usually find a way to accommodate that. If nothing else, a player can take balls at any position he wants to in the off season.

Boagie, remember in the last month of last season? That is precisely what I was lobbying for.
He doesn't have soft hands. He has Emmanuel Burriss hands.
He IS better suited for the outfield.
I'm with you about Bochy. He gets stubborn about some stuff.
Some guys, like Tomlinson, deserve more time.

Rog -- Really quickly, Boly. Where did Creedence Clearwater Revival grow up?

Actually, rog, I can't stand CCR.
I really don't care for them.
But I seem to remember that they are from the SF/Bay area.

Don, I am with you on labeling/assigning kids to utility roles and keeping them with the big club.
That will erode a young player's talent in a hurry!
But sometimes, it can't be avoided.
But Posey in the same foot speed category as "The Snoz?"
I know you're being tongue-in-cheek, but...
For those who may not know what Don is referring to, Ernie was famous for being thrown out at 1b by OUTFIELDERS.
I remember my step father telling me once that he saw the Snoz hit the ball off the fence and STILL be thrown out at 1B!
As to too many LHB, I agree.
But I'm sure it's not like he was trying to load up on that side.
Sometimes the players just weren't available and he had to do what he could do.
For me the "fit" of a player is more important than from which side he hits.
And Sabean, and now Evans consider chemistry and talent first, which is the way I would do it.

As usual, Boly is looking at things through a worst case scenario viewpoint here. I have faith in Pence because of how well he takes care of himself. Is that to say there wont be any more flare-ups? None can really tell at this point. Hamstring and groin injuries can indeed linger sometimes...but not always. I don't think Belt is as bad off as his "poor me" act would have us believe...he was putting full weight on the ankle walking back to the dugout. Angel, with his history, is the one that could be more of a long term lingering thing...just my opinion.
All that said, this rotation is good enough to get us through even if it turns out to be a worst case scenario.

Randy, I ALWAYS see the worst case scenario.
It's a part of me.
Why?
Because since 1957 I've been a Giant and a Ram fan... and both sucked for sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long, I ALWAYS expect the other proverbial shoe to drop.
And all of the success we've had since 2010 hasn't changed that.
Lord how I wish it had... but it hasn't.
