There are a few baseball players I have complete disdain for, for various reasons. Jose Bautista is one of them.
For starters he just looks like a smug son of a bitch. Secondly, I believe he's a juicer that never got caught. Third, the bat flip against the Rangers was ridiculous, and obviously it's more angering for the other team in the post-season. Finally, his comments in backing up Harper's pledge to "make baseball fun again."
Today he found out the hard way that his bat flips do in fact disrespect the other team.
It's my belief that if you consistently do things that disrespect and irritate others and have fun doing it, you're indeed an asshole. Any repercussions that you get after the fact, you deserve 100%.
I enjoyed very much seeing Odor land that right to Bautista's smug face, I only wish he knocked him out cold.

I agree on all points, boagie.
This "fun" stuff for me is just another example of how Millenials aren't just content to beat you, but how they feel they have to humiliate/throw it in the face of their opponents.
In my day, in Don's day, he would have been eating dirt for a long, long... long time.
Gibson, Drysdale, Bunning, Spahn and many others would dust his fanny off until his fanny was so sore from falling on it he'd finally get the message.
Bautista and Harper are examples of all the attitudes that are wrong with the game today.

Bautista did eat it, Boly, and I think there is a common dislike for Harper around baseball, and he does get plunked regularly. Cole Hamels drilled Harper just because he didn't like Harper's hype.
I realize every time you give an opportunity for an old codger to utter the phrase "back in my day" they'll eagerly jump on it. Hell, I find myself saying the same thing more frequently to younger people these days. But I don't think it's necessarily a time period problem, Boly. There were egomanic pricks back in your day too, and they were loved by the fans, just like today.
You don't believe Babe Ruth thought his shit didn't stink? He'd tip his cap to the fans as he rounded the bases. He was brazen enough to call a shot.
I think you'll find that there were assholes in every era of baseball.
Ted Williams was considered a horses ass that never acknowledged the fans.
Ricky Henderson's smug speech after swiping the record setting bag.
Ken Griffey Jr. Watched almost every homerun he hit. So did Bonds.
Obviously there are many more that I can't think of, but those are a few examples.
For every Bryce Harper, Rickey Henderson and Babe Ruth, there's a Buster Posey, Will Clark, Joe DiMaggio and Mike Trout.
The thing I like about baseball is it stays the same. Obviously there are minor adjustments here and there to make the game safer, but the unwritten rules are still there, and most players believe it's important to uphold those rules. Those rules are taught in little league and baseball camps by people who live and breathe baseball, people like you and I.
The stat geeks and sports writers that never played tend to support Harper's opinion, because they believe hype alone should garner championship rings. They don't like the "boring" things that result in Championships. But inside baseball, those unwritten rules are very much alive and well, and MOST players live by them. We should realize this because the Giants live by them, and 3 Championships are a ton more fun than flipping your bat and losing.

All good points, boagie, but honestly, I ONLY used it because that's the way I was taught to play.
Teddy Ballgame was a horses ass by almost everyone's accounts.
Henderson? Don't even get me started. That guy would have been picking his ass out of the dirt all day long.
And IF he got on, I'd try drill him there, too.
That's the way the game WAS played in the 50's and 60's.
Was it right?
No.
But the point was, 'don't show me up.'
That's what Harper and Bautista and so many of the Millennials do.
Like I said; Millennials aren't contend to just beat you, they also want to show you up and shove it in your face.
Harper is a throw back jackass in the Henderson, Ruth, Cobb, Williams mold.
there is no place in the game for the likes of them.

Rog -- You may be right here, Boagie, since I don't know any stats geeks or sports writers who never played the game, and I don't know anyone who doesn't think the games should be played to determine the winner. Why do we care so much what others do? When I played, I played to BEAT you, not settle some perceived grudge.
