We've been led to believe that the Giants are concerned mostly with acquiring players that fit the chemistry with the current organization standards. Apparently bitting your teammate's ear off fits that mold? You guessed it, the Giants just acquired Miguel Olivo. OK, so it was just a Dodger that lost part of his ear to Olivo's cainines, but still...he doesn't exactly fit the character the Giants have been promoting as their type of upstanding citizen. There's really no excuse for biting off someone's ear. How do you apologize for that? And even if you did, would he hear it? I like to think the Giants organization has enough "teeth" to make this guy fly right...but when you resort to biting someone I think you've fully lost it. Anyways, just something to chew on while we're waiting for spring training to start.

DK should be happy tonight. Giants just brought back Conor Gillaspie on a minor league deal.

Good news, I liked Conor too. And if nothing else, it gives us more depth.
There were also reports the Giants were interested in bringing back Uribe, maybe this was plan B.

Yeah, I heard Uribe wants more money, and I can't blame the Giants for penny pinching after all they've spent. I'm surprised Conor fell so far so fast, after hitting .300 most of the year in 2014 before fading to .282. Then again, he's not good defensively and has little power for a third baseman. Hopefully he can help out at other positions too. The Giants could still sign Uribe though, that's the good thing about a minor league deal. No obligation. Saw the Mets give D'Aza 5 million, then sign Cespedes, which rendered D'Aza kind of unneeded.

Uribe would provide power off the bench, which would be nice. Maybe the two parties will still get together if Juan's market doesn't develop.
I read that Tomlinson can play shortstop pretty well, so Gillaspie might make it as a lefty pinch hitter. He can hit righties, but is pretty defenseless against southpaws. If the Giants shed Ehire Adrianza, Gillaspie could make a decent lefty-hitting corner infield complement to Tomlinson's right-handed hitting middle infield backup.
Add Kyle Blanks as the right-handed power hitting 5th outfielder to Blanco's lefty-hitting, good glove 4th outfielder, and the Giants could be looking pretty balanced. If the Giants limit themselves to a dozen pitchers, a possibility with a rotation capable of pitching deeper into games, those bats could all be accommodated.

Boagie- I think Gillaspie is strictly a third baseman now. I believe he would be a serviceable pinch hitter, but I'm not sure Gillaspie (even with some success as a major league starter) would automatically leapfrog Adrianza on the Giants depth chart. In my opinion you want 2 infield bench players, one that can hit, and one that can field. Tomlinson can hit, it's his defense that's in question. Adrianza is a versatile plus defender. I like Conor, but I believe he's only there to add depth in Sacramento in case something goes wrong.

Boagie- I doubt it. I think once Uribe wanted too much the Giants pulled the trigger on Gillaspie.

Boagie- It seems to be a popular opinion that Blanks has a leg up on everyone else as the 5th outfielder. I still believe Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamson are going to battle for that spot this spring. Jarrett had a very good September and Mac had a huge AZFL. Blanks, in my opinion is just more depth at Sacramento in case something goes wrong.

Rog -- You could well be right, although it appears neither Parker nor Williamson is yet a finished product and that both might benefit from more seasoning. Or one or both of them could become this year's Matt Duffy, a rookie who explodes on the majors. But Matt hit .304 with a 145/120 K/BB ratio in the minors. Jarrett has hit .261 with a 770/320 rate, and Mac has hit .298 with a 278/132 K/BB rate. Each player has an OPS of .800 or above. Matt hit .332 in his last season in the minors. Last season Jarrett hit .283, and Williamson weighed in at .249. Jarrett hit great with the Giants, and Mac killed 'em in the Arizona Fall League. But those were very small samples. Parker has some nice tools, but he's got to cut down his strikeout rate (which he did effectively in his brief stint with the Giants). No one here has been able to come up with a single player who struck out as often in the minor leagues as Parker did and then was successful at the plate in the majors. Jarrett might be the first, but do the odds favor it? Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3199/bites?page=1#ixzz3zUQlgCIU

Uribe was supposedly offered one year 3 million by Cleveland and if that's the best thing out there I can see Baer finding that in his sofa cushions. That could affect other roster moves too, as someone like Blanks might not be needed for righty pop off the bench even though they don't play the same positions.

DK should be happy tonight. Giants just brought back Conor Gillaspie on a minor league deal. dk...I don't remember being very hot on Conor...I didn't like his father demanding a major league contract for him to sign after the draft....I did think the Giants never developed him...there was lots of talk about moving him to other positions, but it never happened with the Giants....the White Sox gave him a couple of games at 2B and 1B..I think.....the guys I miss are Perez and Sanchez...I thought Sanchez had the tools but he also had the injury bug...you guys didn't like him but I think the Giants pitchers did.....I thought Perez had some talent...but I was most interested in seeing them to try him back at third...his original position....that arm would have scared the 1B man out of his pants...
