Waiting on contract details, but it's obviously north of 6/120 since he's already turned that down. Rotation looking pretty potent right about now. Hope Boly and Dood are finally pleased!

It's 6/130 with a player opt out after two seasons. That's good for Cueto considering he's only 29.

I'm happy, but does this mean Bumgarner's contract should be readjusted? I think it should be considered moving forward. This also means we'll probably see a lot of Blanco in LF next season.

If I'm the Giants I add a couple of seasons onto the Bumgarner contract. Maybe two or three years at 25 million or so.

I'm with Mark. It would be disrespectful to Madison to not at least make an offer.
But I don't think we'll be seeing Blanco in LF all next year, Boagie, I'm betting he gets more time in CF.
And from what's in the wind... I keep hearing Parra.

Rog -- I don't think Madison's contract should be adjusted, although I think the Giants should be open down the line to extending it. If Madison had been horrible or, worse, become injured, he wouldn't need to and likely wouldn't adjust the contract. As for Blanco in left field, I understand what you're saying, but I don't expect it. I think the Giants will likely trade for an outfielder who will at the very least platoon with Gregor and more likely, replace him in the starting outfield -- at least until one of the starting outfielders gets hurt again. I may have been overly optimistic when I said I felt the Giants were budgeted to spend somewhere around $50 million Annual Average Value on free agents or trades this season, but they're at essentially $40 million right now. That might allow for another decent signing or trade -- or in our wildest imaginations, even an outfielder move and a lesser reliever move. And from what's in the wind... I keep hearing Parra. Rog -- I was just thinking that Gerardo might still fit the budget. The way Bobby Evans has been talking about being heavily involved in trade talk though, I wouldn't be surprised if they acquired a center fielder through trade. If not, I will still be disappointed they didn't exercise Nori Aoki's option. I think they will add another outfielder who is better than Nori and/or a better candidate for center field after 2016. I missed the part where we held a gun to Madison's head and forced him to sign his current deal without representation. I also missed where Madison is unhappy with his deal and wants/needs a new arrangement.

You're right, Randy, but my suggestion works on both levels. It makes up for him being underpaid, and it keeps him from leaving by extending the length of the contract. It's the ultimate win-win

I just think it would be a nice, nice gesture... a way of saying "thanks" for so many things, to Madison. Not the least of which is him NEVER complaining about money. A nice gesture. As Frank Burns of MASH once said, "it's nice to be nice to the nice." Then again, when you find yourself quoting Frank Burns... there's obviously some important people you've missed. boly

The Giants have been a very fair franchise about the value of players and the contracts offered to those players. Randy is right, nobody was holding a gun to Bumgarner's head when he signed, but for God's sake, he's not only our best pitcher, he's statistically our best power hitter too! His value has rose substantially since he signed, and everyone knows that. As Randy points out, there was never a gun pointed at his head, and that will likely be the case when he becomes a free agent, so it's best to make him happy before that day comes.

when we see players giving back money from a contract when they stink it up, then I'll be in favor of paying extra to players that perform above their salary

let me put an even finer point on it...I don't want extra money to be taken away from future payroll budgets just because the team feels morally obligated to pay a player more money when he performs above his mutually agreed-upon salary.

Giving Madison a 2/$50 extension wouldn't be a bad idea IMO. But if Bumgarner is concerned about maximizing his earning power, he likely wouldn't take it.
I think I would make the offer though. If Madison were to become a free agent after the 2019 season, he might be able to command a contract in the 7/$250-$275 area, what with salary inflation. Madison's age 29 and age 30 seasons could well be worth $45 million each. Getting them now for $25 million per might be a win/win for both the Giants (price certainty) and Bumgarner (tripling his present career guaranteed money, if the Giants vest his 2018 and 2019 option years).

If he doesn't take it that's fine, but you offer the money anyway to show your appreciation and to recognize that him making less money than Samardzija and Cueto isn't really fair when you consider his huge role in three world championships

I still want to hear one of you bleeding hearts tell me why it's immoral for the Giants to not offer more money to Bumgarner but it's perfectly acceptable for players to keep all their money when they don't produce up to the level of their salary.

Randy, it's not that I disagree with you, because at the base of my soul, I do not.
But the problem is, the vast % of today's professional athletes are pampered, whining, spoiled little children who constantly need their itty-bitty-precious egos constantly massaged.
And though I CAN'T STAND that about people today, it's a fact of current, albeit disgusting, way of life, and management has no choice BUT to play along at least to some extent.
Now Madison has NEVER, EVER seemed to be that kind of twit I think a gesture by the Giants is a wise play.
I mean, after all, we wouldn't want him to feel "disrespected."
Please note the massive sarcasm in my statement.
Massive sarcasm.
As you have said multiple times NO ONE put a gun to his head to sign that deal.

I think extending Bumgarner would be good business, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen within the next year or two.
