The Giants have signed 25-year- old Hak -Ju Lee to a minor league contract. The Giants might be able to use a better-hitting shortstop backup than Ehire Adrianza, and while Lee hasn't exactly knocked the cover off the ball, he was rated as high as the #44 2012 prospect by Baseball America and #46 by MLB.com.
Lee has a .270/.346/.363 slash in seven minor league seasons. Not much of a signing here (532 K's/267 BB's), but he offers depth to back up and possibly challenge Adrianza. I don't think the Giants have signed too many Korean players, either. Lee hit only .220/.303/.304/.607 in AAA this past season.
Lee's acquisition makes the minor league signing of Kyle Blanks look like a blockbuster, but, hey, there's not a whole heck of a lot going on! Man, I wish we knew what was going on behind the scenes. This time of year is nerve-wracking -- especially since almost NO one is doing much of anything. Actually, a few deals and signings, but not the major ones we're looking for.
The Giants are looking to trade prospects, and this year they have a few. It would be great if they could land a young, cost-controlled player with their prospects.
