Last winter's top free agent pitchers were recently ranked in Bleacher Report's top 80 Starters.
James Shields (4/$75 million -- offered 4/$80 by the Giants) ranked #58.
Jon Lester (6/$155 million -- same offer from the Giants) ranked #20.
Max Scherzer (7/$210 with much of it deferred -- no offer from the Giants) ranked #3.
This year's top guys are Zack Greinke, David Price, Johnny Cueto and Jordan Zimmermann. They are ranked #7, #10, #19, #26. As a group, they are younger than their top three predecessors from last winter. Think prices will be high this winter?
I don't know if this is good news or not, but quite a few of this year's free agent pitchers are ranked between Shields at #58 and Lester at #20. Ignoring how accurate these rankings are, what do they seem to imply?
#58 (Shields) is a mid-level #3 starter.
#20 (Lester) is a mid-to-low-level ace.
#3 (Scherzer) is one of the very top starters in the game.
#26 (Zimmermann) is a low-level ace.
#19 (Cueto) is a mid-to-low-level ace.
#10 (Price) is a high-to-mid-level ace.
#7 (Greinke) is just below the very top starters in the game (and many would argue that he IS a very top starter).
Incidentally, Madison Bumgarner was ranked #6, immediately behind Chris Sale, Dallas Keuchel, Scherzer, Jake Arrieta, and the nonpareil. Being ranked immediately ahead of Greinke is a coup.
