Here is what the Giants' injuries did to the various components of the team:
Their strength was a "long" lineup. Obviously, injuries shorten a lineup.
Their biggest weakness was in their starting rotation. Injuries to four of their six starters accentuated those injuries.
The bullpen stayed relatively healthy, and overall performed well.
Their bench was iffy, and the injuries just made it "iffier."
Here is just one aspect of the injuries. The Giants had no at least five players (Aoki, Blanco, Susac, Sanchez and Belt) affected by concussions. Prior to this season, did we know five Giants who had EVER been affected by concussions? I can think of only three. Belt, Sanchez and Mike Matheny. Maybe there have been more, but do we get the idea?
Another one: Who would have suspected that the most durable player in the majors, a guy who is in great shape and still relatively young, would miss most of the season?
Who would have thought that four out of six starters would miss significant time to injury? How many years do we cumulatively have to go back to find four total significant injuries to the staff? Up until 2014, the trio of Bumgarner, Cain and Lincecum seemed indestructible. Look at guys like Zito and Vogelsong. Far healthier than most. (I'm talking about the new iteration of Vogelsong, not the one who became injured right after the Giants traded him when they had him the first time.)
