Joe dived for a ball... and re aggravated his back inflammation.
Excuse me? How did THAT dive, re aggravate' his inflammation?
We all saw the minor league video; He laid out, and threw the guy out. THAT dive was more drastic than his latest one, and if any dive was going to re injure his back, THAT one should have re inujred the back, not this dive.
Sorry, but what they are tellilng us, IMHO, is a truck load of horse manure.
I contend the information we're getting about Joe's back is nothing more than camoflauge to keep fans pacified; That things are worse in there than originally suspected.
The question is, should we worry?
Well, on the surface of things... no.
Pagan recovered from his back problems, and so did Peavy.
We'll see.
But it would be a shame for Joe to have his career shortend because of a back issue.
A literal, crying shame.

As to Panik being shut down, I agree.
I worry a LOT about back problems.

I doubt we have to worry about Panik's back long term at this point. Never had back problems before and this new problem is the same injury. I see where there's cause for concern, Boly, but at this point there's no evidence that it's chronic.

I hope you're right, Mark, and based upon your job, you certainly come into contact with more "injured" people than I do. I just worry about backs. Heck, hurt your back bad enough, you can't even bend over to wipe your own backside! boly

It's not my pharmaceutical opinion, Boly, it's simply based on what I've heard the Giants say. Hopefully they're not just feeding us wishful thinking.

they would never intentionally feed us mis information, would they?
Would they?
Ummm, yes.
They did it with Scutaro, they did it with Freddy Sanchez, they did it with Cain... it's a long list.
So, IMHO, yes, they would.

The bigger problem is when the Giants themselves buy the wishful thinking with no credible backup plan. Curious that it mostly seems to happen with 2nd basemen. It's troublesome to me that these back issues are dogging Panik at such a young age. Could it be one of those things that goes away for a while then comes back...goes away then comes back?

Consider our problems at 2B.
HOW MANY YEARS has it gone on now?
Back to Freddy Sanchez isn't back far enough.
since Kent left, either the guy playing there stinks, is done, or gets hurt.
Sanchez, Scutaro, and now Panik.
That's tooooo much of a coincidence.

Rog -- Perhaps you're right, although frankly I think it's just a conspiracy theory. Why do I think that? Well, if Joe was injured more than the Giants let on, how is it that he could hit two doubles and a home run in seven at bats? Rog -- That's certainly true in Panik's case. All the Giants had to back him up was Tomlinson and Duffy, although Duffy was otherwise occupied. But Duffy came up last season as a second baseman (and actually platooned with Joe for about a day), and if necessary, I suspect the Giants could have come up with a second or third baseman this late in the season. Guys are still available in September, although they're worth less to the acquiring team since they aren't eligible for the postseason. since Kent left, either the guy playing there stinks, is done, or gets hurt. Rog -- Ray Durham had some problems staying healthy, but he still played 734 games in 5 2/3 seasons. Played well too, hitting for a .797 OPS. Not much of a glove, but he averaged about 130 games a season, hit 77 home runs and stole 46 bases. Not bad for a player in the final five seasons of his career. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3034/panik?page=1#ixzz3lwPNMYR2

If Sabean listened to me, he would have given 3B to Duffy in the spring and saved over 5 million and maybe some of their loses...and he didn't come out of no where as I wrote about him 2 years ago.....

he didn't come out of no where as I wrote about him 2 years ago..... Rog -- As I said, he came out of nowhere. I have a question for each of you. As we know, right-handed batters generally have less of a platoon split, but they usually still have one. For instance, Buster Posey has hit well against right-handed pitchers (.826 OPS) and has KILLED southpaws (.962). Same with Willie Mays and most good (and not-so good) right-handed hitters. Matt Duffy's OPS this season is .775. Any idea how that breaks down against right-handed and lefty pitchers? Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/3034/panik#ixzz3m0XKekQ5
