I'm sorry, I like the kid's bat but his defense when a ball is not hit right at him, flat out SUCKS. I expect middle infielders, when they go to a dive, not to allow a ball to go right under the glove. If the ball goes beyond a full stretch reach, that's different...but when it goes under the body or under the glove that is UNACCEPTABLE. The ball needs to be knocked down at the very least.

It's kind of irrelevant with Tomlinson anyway. With Panik back he has no future with the team as anything other than a backup, and with his defensive deficiencies he probably will continue to be a minor leaguer.

Randy's right.
I saw that last night and I said, "Seriously? Frickin' seriously?"
That can't happen but one time to a rookie.
Just once until they adjust to the speed of the game.
Three times?
Nope.
This kid is not an infielder.
Thus my comment that the Giants should be giving him a shot in the outfield at AAA next year, and in the Arizona Fall league this year.

Tomlinson's defense hasn't really been that bad, has it?

Tomlinson's defense hasn't really been that bad, has it? dk...I think Tomlinson has made some great plays ....I can't find too much fault for a guy missing a diving stop/catch...it is a desperate play and usually fails........I made a dive for a ball when I was in a St.Louis Brown's tryout camp....missed by 5 feet.......68 years ago....

Last night's error was not just pitiful, it was costly

What about his two plays the night before, Randy. Sparkling plays... no comment on those?

They were indeed very good plays Boly...but they still don't make up for the flubs, IMO

Something I was thinking about recently regarding fielding concerned the diving defensive play.
Doesn't it seem that players record outs on diving plays far more often than they did in our youths? In Don's case, the gloves of his youth were far inferior to those used today. But my son has the Rawlings six-finger glove my mom, sister and I bought him for Father's Day in either 1961 or 1962. It's a DARN good glove, and once broken in, wasn't far off the gloves of today.
Willie Mays rarely dove for a ball, just as he almost never dove back into a base on pickoff throws. It has been said that was because his great instincts meant he didn't need to.
But what about the balls he missed by inches? They may not have been common, but I can tell you that I certainly saw some. Today, diving seems to be far more the norm, and it does extend range by a foot or so, depending on the play.
Today's hitters face more speed and movement on pitches, better positioned fielders, occasional over shifts, faster fielders, more diving stops, better balance and stronger arms to throw players out after the dive, tough backhand or spin.

Here is a question: Does making two sparkling plays on 50/50 balls but flubbing a close-to-100% ball equal out to as good fielding as not making the flub on the close-to-100% ball but not making the two 50/50 plays either?
