When Tomlinson first came up, I mentioned that I'd like to give him a shot NEXT season, to see if he could play CF at AAA.
Based upon this article in "Giant's Extra," thank God I'm not the only one of thought of it!
"I thought I would feel a little more nervous," Tomlinson said. "But ever since my first at-bat, once I got in the box, it was just kind of like another game. That’s what the minor leagues are for. If I would have come straight out of college like other sports, there might have been a little more nerves, but having so many games and at-bats in the minor leagues, preparing yourself ... the Giants are a front-line club so they aren’t going to bring you up just to gain experience. They’re going to bring you up when you’re ready for it."
The Giants often get criticized for favoring older players, but during this 5 1/2 year run, that statement is pretty true to form. They recognized Madison Bumgarner was ready when he was 20. Posey flew through the system, as did Brandon Belt. Clearly, they saw something in Duffy last year to bring him up from Double-A, and we've also seen it the past couple of years with relievers, notably Hunter Strickland and Josh Osich. One of these years, the Giants might actually do it with an outfielder!
Or maybe they just teach Tomlinson to play the outfield, as so many folks have suggested.
The question was posed to Bochy last night as to what they're going to do with Kelby when Joe came back.
I thought Bruce kind of hedged the question, but if I were Bruce... I'd be having the kid take a LOT of balls in the outfield in pre game activities, because IF we make the post season, I think the kid needs to be on the roster, and NOT Adrianza.
I'd keep him for PR, PH, and an emergency outfielder.
I mean, we did it with Travis last year, and Darren Ford before him (for pinch running).
If I'm Bochy, I want to see if the kid has a chance to be able to do it.
