I agree, Randy. I don't think the Giants will make a big splash, not for a starting pitcher or a bat. If they do make a big move it will be for a late inning reliever. There are a lot of really good ones available. Chapman, Kimbrel and Paplebon top the list. A lot of the contending teams already have a strong closer, and their focus will be landing a starter or a bat. So the Giants might be able to swoop in and grab one of those closers for not too much.

Papelbon is a Nat now...it's said that the Nats were in play for both Kimbrell and Chapman but that the price for either of those guys was too high. I don't expect the Giants to allow the Reds or the Padres to take them to the cleaners. Also, Strickland is moving up the totem pole in the bullpen with his electric stuff.

Chapman would be worth it. Big lefty who throws 103 mph, nobody in baseball has one of those in their bullpen.
The reports (or rumors) I've been reading today are claiming the Giants are pushing hard for Aroldis.
Could I finally be right about a trade target? It'll be interesting to see.

If the Giants cough up the prospects to get Chapman, I have to believe it will be with the idea of making him into a starter before next season. The new hot rumor is that Big Game James Shields is a target. CSN Giants Insider Alex Pavlovic thinks this is doable for the Giants because the Padres are more interested in dumping salary than anything.

There's also a lot of talk out there claiming the Giants are one of the front runners for Hamels, which I find hard to believe.
It's hard to take anything you hear from the "insiders" as actual inside information. I think it's just pure speculation on their part.

I haven't heard that the Giants are "frontrunners" for either Shields or Hamels but they are definitely talking to those GMs. I keep hearing it's the Cubs, the Dodgers and Rangers out front for Hamels with the Giants and Red Sox also in the mix. It makes a lot of sense that they are interested in mostly players with years left on their contracts after the Beltran episode.

Perhaps "front runners" was a poor choice of words. It's hard to determine a front runner if the details of trade talks aren't really known. But I have seen "reports" that the Giants are pushing hard for a number of high profile players. Again, it could be mostly speculation, and they might also be purposely putting their name in the mix to force the Dodgers to make a desperate move. With the rest of the NL West out of legitimate contention, I get the sense the Dodgers and Giants are ready for a chess match, but neither side wants the first move.
