Since our #1 pick played for a high school right down the street from where I teach, and he's a Ventura County kid, the local paper had a big write up on him.
They were honest; they said up front the kid had a weed problem when he was younger, and that that was something that caused some teams to back off.
Whether it remains a problem remains to be seen.
I got to watch some film on Chris Shaw, and I'll be honest, what I saw impressed me.
1-Quick, short stroke for a guy so tall.
2-Unlike Arias, who's all asses and elbows when he swings (as in too many moving parts), Shaw is direct to the ball with a slight upper cut that translates into 'great back spin' when he squares the ball up.
3-Quiet hands; IMHO, a must for a hitter. A slight 'take back' to start his swing, but no where near as far, or as long, as Blanco's
4-Short stride, quick hands.
5-The little film I saw him in the OF didn't impress me at all. With the arc on his throws, I'm thinking average arm at best.
And since I didn't get to see him run, I can't comment on foot speed.
But being excited on this guy is a must, IMHO, for Giant fans.

I'm confused...it's ok to be excited about a compensatory pick who has yet to play pro ball, but it's wrong to be excited about a CAL League MVP. hmmmm

Which guy wasn't I impressed with, Randy?
When I wrote the post, I hadn't see Phil pitch. I made that clear.
All I could do was report what was written.
Shaw impressed me.

Long hair and weed? Sounds like we've found our next Tim Lincecum! I'll be interested to see our free agent approach after this season, because it looks like the Giants will need starting pitching, yet they draft kids who will probably get here quickly like Beede and this kid. They'll probably look to add veterans with Peavy like deals rather that throw top money at pitchers like Price and (my preference) Johnny Cueto.

I remember about 10 years back when management announced precisely what they were going to do; draft pitching, pitching and more pitching.
Pretty good plan, actually.
We've stock piled a number of really good arms, some of which will likely have an impact next year. Maybe one or two, even this year.
I know Cordier isn't one of their top prospects, but he's a guy I REALLY like.

As I recall, the thought process was that HUDSON was going to be the guy to 'bridge the gap' until the kids were ready.
And he's done that.
It's just that, every time I watch him pitch, I'm saddened, as I am with all aging vets. He's a great guy to have for youngsters like Bumgarner and Heston. It just looks to me like he hung on one year too many.

that's exactly what I was saying before the year started Boly...his desire is gone now that he has his ring and certainly his stamina is not there as well. I heard that on normal 4 days rest he is getting hammered but on extra rest he is better, although last night on TWO extra days of rest he wasn't sharp. Assuming everything else remains the same, I'd consider dropping him to the bullpen when Peavy and/or Cain is/are able to return.

I agree, Randy. In fact, I think he was one of the ones I was most concerned about before the season started.
In all honesty, Hudson is the one to NOT be starting when Cain gets back.
If and when Peavy is ready... it's a toss up. Unless they're going to go with 6 starters, which I DON'T want to see.
Unless Vogey or Timmy implodes, or even Heston.
If things go the way there are going, there will be no room for Peavy.
