So far their offense is looking just as tough as I predicted, despite being owned by the master Bumgarner last night. They are legit contenders in the west.

As a team they're batting just 3 points higher than the Giants without Pence, yet all the talk is about how great their hitting is and they're only half a game ahead of the Giants. What happens when their offense stops hitting over their heads? Sorry, I still don't see San Diego as a big threat.
By the way, the Giants pitching staff has a lower ERA than the Padres thus far.

The name of the game is scoring runs...the Padres are #1 in the NL in runs scored...the Phils are the only team that has scored fewer runs than the Giants.

I understand that, Randy. Yet the Padres are only 1 game over .500. When you're scoring a lot of runs and you're only 1 game over .500, what happens when youre not scoring a ton of runs? I'll give you a hint, it involves a face and falling flat on it.

That wasn't the point...we had posters here doubting how good the Padres offense would be. They have proven to be as much or more improved than I thought. With the pitching they already had and added to, they are clearly a formidable team

Interesting how two of Randy's main arguments came to a head tonight, the Padres didn't hit well, and it was because of Vogelsong, heh.
Either Randy will have to admit maybe the Padres aren't that good offensively after all, or he'll have to admit he was too quick to give up on Vogey. This should be good.

Ok, let's see...a quick check shows the Padres still lead the NL in runs, and Vogelsong's ERA is still a pathetic 6.84. So I think I'm still justified on both counts.

You'd still release Vogelsong after tonight's game?

I would not have re-signed him and I would have released him before tonight. I guess I'd leave him on for now but I still don't have confidence in him, especially on the road. Definitely when Peavy is healthy, he would be gone

LOL Padres offense! That return to earth came pretty quickly. Looks like the same old hitless wonders to me. Seven scoreless innings against Vogelstiff? And Randy, everyone knew their offense would be improved, but the question was how much and if that made them better than the Giants and Dodgers. Right now the answer is no and no.

Upton showed me last night EXACTLY why I never want him on my team; like always, he brings his bad at bats into the field.
He's prone to brooding over bad at bats, and can't seem to separate one aspect of the game from another.
He's always been a selfish player, concerned about himself and no one else.
And that's exactly what I saw last night when he airmailed that ridiculous throw to the plate.
No excuses for that crap.

Boagie- Despite what you believe, thus far, signing Vogelsong was a good move. His performance up until last night has been poor, but the need for a 6th starter has been crucial, so Sabean had the right idea. Of course, nobody can predict what's going to happen, if Sabean knew Vogey was going to have a bloated ERA, maybe he'd have landed a different low priced 6th starter, but who was available at that price?
Peavy is the one I thought was the bad signing and I too felt it was rushed, but at the time you were among the many fans who were crying about no moves being made, and that's exactly why the Peavy signing was made. Once that happened, a 6th starter became a necessity IMO.
I still consider the Vogey signing to be a good one, mainly because the alternative would have probably resulted in Blach being called up too early.

Dood - I seem to recall you basically panning every offseason move as being garbage...how'd you like them today?
but the question was how much and if that made them better than the Giants and Dodgers. Right now the answer is no and no.
Dood - and now, yes and no

You really think a half game lead makes them better at this point in the season? The Giants are playing really good ball right now. I recall you saying the Giants were not going to be able to compete with the Dodgers or Padres, so far that's obviously not the case. They're competing with both, especially head to head, and they're doing it without Hunter Pence. I know you're very eager to congratulate yourself, but how about we let the season play out a bit before you tell us all how wrong we are?

Actually I believe what I said is it wasn't looking good for the Giants to be able to reach the playoffs with the question marks on the roster. Some of the questions are still ongoing but certainly the team is playing very well of late. We shall see how things progress. What cannot be denied is the Padres offense has been the most productive in the NL while the Giants O has been among the LEAST productive. I hope the Giants can surpass them in the end but the point of this thread was merely that people would have been unwise to underestimate the Padres.

The weird thing is that they have three infielders hitting .206 or less, and 4th outfielder Will Venable is hitting just .138.

The Padres are averaging an impressive 4.8 runs per game. I think that will drop off by at least half a run as the season goes on and likely by more than that.
They're hitting .308 with RISP, .307 with runners on and just .217 with the bases empty. Those numbers will be a lot closer by the end of the saason. Based on how they've hit overall and throwing out the sequencing, they've been more like a 4.0 run team.
