I didn't see the lie in the linked article. I think Shields was hoping for a lot more money, but he did get himself into a pretty good spot. No matter what, I wouldn't expect him to hang his head and say the Padres were a desperation move on his part.

Incidentally, the word is that when Shields rejected their offer, the Giants moved on to Peavy and Romo, whose average salary per season was within $500K of what they offered Shields.
I think Shields would have been a nice pick up at the price the Giants offered him. I also believe he thought he was going to get a lot more. Numbers as high as 5/$110 were floated. Now that WOULD have been a clear overpay, and I'm glad the Giants didn't go there.

You were probably being sarcastic too. Clearly I missed it for a long while.

Or nobody lied, no promises were made, or broken, and things just worked out the way they did. Have you ever considered that?

What's the other version? I'm not saying you're wrong, I seriously don't know.

Randy -- either Shields is lying or the Giants lied about what their offer was Rog -- Neither side is telling the truth. The Giants offered more than they said they did, and Shields said they offered less than he thought. If the Giants had realized how high their offer was, they would have retracted it sooner. And if Shields had realized they offered as much as they did, he wouldn't have waited to take less from the Padres. When he realized all the other teams had signed their Lesters and Scherzers, he began to pray. "Our Padres, who art leading the league in trades, hallowed be thy pitchers' park." Rog -- One version was that the Giants offered four years and $80 million. The other was that they offered $80 million over four years. There is no way those can both be right.
Boagie- See, I heard it was only $20 million a year, for 4 years. I'm getting mixed messages here. We need to expose Sabean for the lying SOB he is. It's not like Sabean is the best GM in baseball (actually he likely is.) I for one am glad Randy is keeping a close watch on all this betrayal.

Randy -- All you have to do is read what Schulman wrote, geniuses. I'm not making shit up Rog -- Randy isn't making this up. Schulman wrote that the Giants offered Shields 4/$80 "that Shields was not prepared to accept." Schulman goes on to say "Shields confirmed talks with the Giants, but not the reported offer." Randy isn't making this up. What Schulman wrote falls just short of confirming the 4/$80, but he makes it clear he believes the 4/$80 offer existed. It is quite possible that Shields didn't confirm the amount of the offer because he ultimately signed for less. It appears Shields was playing a game of chicken the Giants weren't prepared to play. There was a rumor of a 5/$110 offer that now doesn't appear to have been legitimate, but it appears the Giants' 4/$80 offer did. Randy isn't making this up. Nor is Schulman, who I'm pretty sure believes the Giants did offer 4/$80. So it appears no one is making anything up. I didn't make this up. By the way, Randy, thanks for calling Boagie and me "geniuses." I don't think either of us believes he is, but it's nice that you showed such confidence in us. You were the guy who created the genesis of our genius.
