Not surprisingly, despite Miguel Cabera's playing through an injury season in 2014, the MLB Network still picked him as the game's #1 first baseman. How good has Cabrera been in his 11 1/2 seasons?
Well, good enough that through his age 31 season he is ahead of the record pace set for hits (Pete Rose), doubles (Tris Speaker), home runs (Barry Bonds), RBI's (Hank Aaron) and the dubious double plays grounded into (Cal Ripken). Plus, he's within shouting distance of Rickey Henderson's pace in runs scored and Aaron's pace in total bases.
He and youngsters Clayton Kershaw and Mike Trout have starts toward all-time greatness. Not just the Hall of Fame, but all-time greats. In Cabrera's case, he's got more than a small start. At the age of 26, Kershaw has played in seven seasons, and at age 22, Trout has played parts of four seasons.
Among the Giants' top young players, Buster Posey and Madison Bumgarner have each played in parts of five seasons. Among the "older guys", Tim Lincecum has played in 8 seasons and Matt Cain 10.
