It bugs me that we Giants fans have become spoiled. It's human nature, but it's wrong. Yet we have succumbed.

Spoiled, Rog?
I vehemently disagree.
We are over whelmingly pleased with what we've accomplished.
Last year I believe the odds against us winning the world series were either 20-1 or 50-1 Can't remember which.
We EXPECT a lot from this group, yes. But spoiled?
No.
Each and every one of us KNOWS we can't win every year... but... and it's a huge BUT... in the off season, we EXPECT the GM and management to put us in a POSITION to at least have a good chance to win again.
My position on this one is, has been and continues to be the same; they did NOT.
I'm okay, no over whelmed, but okay, with the line up.
But our starters as a whole are middle of the pack, to third tier of the pack at best.
Say what you want.
Disagree all you want.
If I'm wrong, I'll eat 3 plates of crow, and I'll do it gladly.
But if Sabean does NOT acquire someone really good along the way... we're staring, I say for the eleventeenth time, 3rd place right in the face.

After 4+ years of near sellout crowds I think the fans have the right to be spoiled.

call it what you like...spoiled or raised expectations...the Giants themselves caused it with all the postseason success. For my part I expect more too because they took those two years off in between and to me that's just not acceptable. Plus, the Dodgers have clearly moved AHEAD of us in the division pecking order...and arguably the Padres have also, thanks to the lack of urgency this offseason. For someone who hates to see the Dodgers succeed nearly as much as I hate to see the Giants fail, that makes it doubly tough. Looks like I'm going to have to endure a third straight year looking up the crack of the Dodgers...that SUCKS.

From the Urban Dictionary: Definition. spoiled. One who is given anything and everything they want. Mom: "Happy Birthday Emma" Spoiled Kid: "What! How many presents are there?"
On average teams win the World Series once every 30 years. With three in five seasons we have become spoiled, even wanting to dictate how much the Giants "should" spend.
After waiting 57 years for a World Championship, we should be well aware of how rare World Series Championships are. But we've come to expect it far more often than once every 30 years. Far more often.
There are at least 26 groups of fans who have a right to be very envious of the Giants' recent success.
Don't get me wrong. I'm delighted that we've gotten the CHANCE to be spoiled by the Giants' success. I'm just disappointed that we've succumbed.

El Dooderino -- call it what you like...spoiled or raised expectations...the Giants themselves caused it with all the postseason success. Rog -- They haven't caused it. They have facilitated it, but they certainly haven't caused it. El Dooderino -- For my part I expect more too because they took those two years off in between and to me that's just not acceptable. Rog -- The fans of 29 other teams would disagree with you. In fact, what you say here is a clear indication that you are indeed spoiled. El Dooderino -- Plus, the Dodgers have clearly moved AHEAD of us in the division pecking order...and arguably the Padres have also, thanks to the lack of urgency this offseason. Rog -- The Giants have been behind teams each of the three seasons in which they have won the World Championship. They have shown they can overcome the odds. Three times in five years. El Dooderino -- For someone who hates to see the Dodgers succeed nearly as much as I hate to see the Giants fail Rog -- That would seem to make you nearly as much an anti-Dodgers fan as a Giants fan, and I think that cheapens your Giants fandom. You're hating fans whom you would likely be a part of if your ties were to LA instead of SF. We're taught not to hate people. Why hate the Dodgers or their fans? I was a fan of the Giants when the rivalry was even bigger than it is now. Shouldn't that simply have made me root all the harder for the Giants, rather than hating the Dodgers? that once every 30 years thing is pure crap. We all know baseball does not have its titles spread out amongst the teams evenly. Plus we haven't been given everything...if so it would have been 30 in the last 30 years. With revenues in the top 5 it is more than reasonable for fans to expect the team to blow past projected budgets if an opportunity to win more titles exists.
And just for the record, I don't personally expect TITLES every year...what I expect is a more than reasonable chance to make the postseason. I believe that a great opportunity to bulk up the club existed THIS offseason and instead the team went the other way. It got worse and significantly so. Meanwhile the Padres got better, possibly passing us by...the Dodgers have already been better than us the past 2 seasons, and if they get Moncada, that wont change this year. I say the chances of making the playoffs is 50/50 at best...to me that's unacceptable. What I have seen this offseason says to me the FO is taking advantage of the fact that the even numbered year phenomenon is now a "thing" that they can use as an excuse to NOT go all out in years following a title. Look if they got the players they have the money to get and still missed the playoffs, then I would be fine with that because they gave an honest effort. But instead, as usual, we have to cheer for the bargain basement replacements. The stands at AT&T will be full again this year and those fans are getting cheated, IMO.
When your team is in the top 5 in revenue, 50/50 is not good enough. Expectations SHOULD be higher...it's very reasonable to have high expectations. The low income teams do NOT have a level playing field and that's just a fact of life in MLB. I'm not about to give a team with ZERO empty seats and revenue in the top 5 (close to top 3) the same passes a team with low revenue gets. That's just plain crazy. Any comparison to teams outside of the top 10 in revenue is ridiculous.

and I wont lie...it makes me want to hurl whenever I see a Dodgers hat in the Bay Area...I have at times gotten nauseous seeing the Dodgers ahead of us in the standings. To me that makes me a BETTER Giants fan because I am emotionally invested in the team and the rivalry. I have NEVER seen that emotional investment in you...you are more invested emotionally in stats and facts than in the team or the rivalry

Boly -- But if Sabean does NOT acquire someone really good along the way... we're staring, I say for the eleventeenth time, 3rd place right in the face. Rog -- I don't expect the Giants to finish 3rd in the division, although that in itself wouldn't cause them to miss out on the playoffs. I agree with you that the Padres are much improved and could be out the Giants, but I'm not expecting it. Although the Padres' rotation is somewhat unproven, I agree with you I would prefer it to the Giants'. But I would take the Giants' bullpen over that of the Padres. We complain because the Giants acquired "only" Casey McGehee and Nori Aoki to play third base and left field, but the Padres have a few holes in the field themselves. Their catcher, third baseman and keystone combination have career averages of .238 or worse. Their center fielder is a corner outfielder who hit .222 last year. On the other hand, it is now being blogged that the Padres are the favorites for James Shields. That would certainly make a difference. But at this moment, it appears the Padres have more problems than do the Giants. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/2698/spoiled?page=1#ixzz3R61QoI4I

Dood - I actually believe it would. I don't expect the 3rd place team in the west to beat out the 2nd place teams in both the east and central

El Dooderino -- that once every 30 years thing is pure crap. Rog -- A freshman in high school can tell you it isn't. On average, a team wins the title every thirty years. 30 divided by 1 = 30. El Dooderino -- We all know baseball does not have its titles spread out amongst the teams evenly. Rog -- Yes, we do. No question about that. But this may surprise you. Over the past 30 years just over half the teams have won a World Series. If we go back two years before that, a full 60% have won. Randy -- I believe that a great opportunity to bulk up the club existed THIS offseason and instead the team went the other way. It got worse and significantly so. Rog -- Of course they got worse based when comparing this year's players with last year's. They lost Pablo Sandoval and Mike Morse and replaced them with Casey McGehee and Nori Aoki. In terms of talent, no one would make that trade. But we pretty much knew all along that something like that was going to happen. Brian Sabean said right after the season that the Giants would increase payroll, but not to expect anything outside the ordinary. Simple math quickly told us that it was going to take at least $20 million more than the budget to re-sign each of the Giants' five free agents. Brian indirectly told us the Giants' budget wouldn't permit them to bring everyone back. It is still possible the Giants will be as good as last year's team. And they will almost certainly be better than the team that won the postseason. The Giants will no longer have Gregor Blanco and Travis Ishikawa or Juan Perez in the lineup as they did in winning the World Championship. They'll have Matt Cain, Angel Pagan and Brandon Belt back from injury. That's not insignificant. Spoiler alert: Boly, you will likely want to stop reading here. Many here ignored that Brian told us about what the Giants would spend. At least as many didn't believe me when I said that the Giants would spend around $30 million free agents. That's because I believed what Brian Sabean said. And took the time to figure out how much the Giants would have left over for free agents. All we needed to do to see what was going to happen overall was listen to Sabean. In general terms he said what he was going to do, and then he proceeded to do it -- even when neither Plan A (Sandoval) nor Plan B (Lester) worked out. All we needed to do was listen to Sabean. That's all. You know how Dennis Green said, "They were who we thought they were?" Brian did what he said he would do. And for that, some are calling him a liar.
