I'm curious as to why those who highly value postseason performances aren't strongly suggesting the Giants re-sign Ryan Vogelsong. The Giants have won every one of his seven postseason starts. His ERA is 2.92 -- even lower as a starter.

Unlike Boagie, who wants Zito, Peavey and Vogey all back and thinks Verlander and Lester are losers, I don't see postseason success as an overwhelming factor...but it should indeed be a strong factor...UNLESS your objective is to make the postseason and the hell with what happens after that. But if you want to be a factor in postseason, your chances improve greatly when you have guys like Bumgarner and Sandoval that ramp it up in October/November.

Vogelsong was amazing in the 2012 post season, but after a really good performance this year against the Nationals where he consistently hit 94 mph for the first time all season he was dreadful against the Cardinals and Royals. A group that judges small sample sizes is certainly going to realize that the post season "magic" of Ryan Vogelsong is no longer there.

Randy --I don't see postseason success as an overwhelming factor...but it should indeed be a strong factor. Rog -- If postseason success is a strong factor, Ryan should be very popular. The Giants have never lost a postseason game he started, which is something even Madison Bumgarner, Matt Cain, Tim Hudson and Tim Lincecum can't say. He had a horrible 2013 season which may have been affected by injury, but his other three seasons since returning to the Giants were 3.37, 2.74 and 4.00 with at least 180 innings pitched in each of the three seasons. Vogelsong is projected somewhere around 2/$16, so he isn't overly expensive. Depending on how much a person values the postseason and how much he values recent regular season performance compared to overall record, Ryan could be a nice pickup. Not valuing postseason performance as much as some, due to its small sample size, I nevertheless give Ryan credit for being a consistent if not overwhelming pitcher in three of his four Giants seasons. While his ERA varied from 2.74 to 4.00 in those seasons, his Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP)was 3.60, 3.67 and 3.85 in those seasons, showing he was very inconsistent in what he himself could control. Not that I'm suggesting the Giants re-sign him, but Vogelsong could be a solid back-of-the-rotation pickup. A good and a potentially bad thing I just read in Steve Adams' MLB Trade Rumors chat: . He applauded the Giants for setting their limit and then not overpaying for Pablo. . New Cubs manager Joe Maddon managed James Shields at Tampa Bay and is likely talking him up to the Cubs' front office.
