Four years 52 million. I really can't fathom the Giants thinking here. The offseason is now James Shields or bust.

4 years, 52 million. You've got to be kidding me! No way Headley is worth that kind of money, and I'm glad we didn't pay it.
But Mark, you're right on the button again; Shields or bust.

Jed Lowrie to the Astros as well. The Giants are the only team in baseball yet to make a roster move this offseason. Astrubal Cabrera is just about the only option left for them.

There's a Korean 3rd baseman they're rumored to be heavily interested in too. That fella just hit the market today.

Knowing Sabean, it's hard to believe he let all these free agents pass to sign a third baseman he's never seen play a major league game.

I didn't say it was the best option, but it is an option. Another option that's been rumored that the Giants might be interested in is trading for David Freese. I however don't see a big trade being made because other teams are probably fixated on players the Giants aren't comfortable giving away. I'd imagine Belt, Panik and Crick are the top 3 asked about.

Kyle Crick still has a high ceiling, but he carries a lot of risk. He makes Tim Lincecum look like a control pitcher. I would certainly be willing to part with him in the right deal.
Brian Sabean has said the Giants are likely to go the trade route for third base, and Crick could be part of the bait. I don't think Belt or Panik are going anywhere, barring a blockbuster.
I think if the Giants don't sign Shields, their backup plan is Peavy. I think I would rather they go that route, since IMO they would be putting too many eggs in the Shields basket. They could afford Peavy, Aoki and Romo, although I would rather they put money into a third baseman than into Romo. Romo did finish the season extremely strongly and bumped up his strikeout rate while reducing his WHIP from 2013.
I'm intrigued by the Korean guy for third base, but I have little way to evaluate him. More than anything, I'd love to see the Giants get the 19-year-old Cuban Moncado, although I'm simply going by scouting reports (which do seem broadly impressed).
Don't know what to think of Freese. He had a career-high line drive rate, but also set a career high in strikeout rate. Right at his career swinging strike rate though, so that might not be a problem. It doesn't appear he's a very good fielder. Likely a contract around $7.5-$8 million, so he's not cheap. Eligible for free agency a year from now.
I don't think I'd give up much for him, as I'm really not that hot on him. Really good in 2012, but not especially good since.

I haven't seen where Sabean said they'll trade for a third baseman, Rog. The only trade rumor I've heard is Justin Upton. Supposedly the Braves are trying to include their third baseman Chris Johnson, but the Giants aren't interested. If they can't sign Astrubal Cabrera, and he's supposedly unwilling to play 3B, I'm starting to think for the first time that they'll go for a big outfielder and just hand 3B to Matt Duffy.

I think that's an obvious assumption, Rog, but Sabean didn't actually say it!

I didn't read the Haft article but headlines are deceptive sometimes and are NOT taken from direct quotes. But of course if you piece together what has taken place and been said by the Giants all along, it is, as Rx says, an obvious assumption to make. The third base FA options are all but dried up. And the Giants stated from day one that they would fill 3rd base from outside the organization, assuming they didn't get Pablo back.

Randy -- I didn't read the Haft article but headlines are deceptive sometimes and are NOT taken from direct quotes. Rog -- That is a very good point. I don't know how it is with internet articles, but in print journalism, very seldom does the author write his own headline, since he doesn't know how much space there will be for the headline or what size print the editor will choose.
