Andrew Friedman came in and made grandiose statements about building through the farm system and clever low budget signings, but in the end it's always the same old song and dance with the Dodgers. Possibly fearful of Jon Lester signing with the Giants, the Dodgers supposedly came in with a huge offer for Lester that blows the Giants, Red Sox and Cubs out of the water. If Lester is only about money, expect him to become a Dodger. And if the Dodgers fail to land Lester, look for them to unload the farm system for Cole Hamels. They replace Colletti and pay millions for someone to do the same thing Ned would have done.

Mark -- Andrew Friedman came in and made grandiose statements about building through the farm system and clever low budget signings, but in the end it's always the same old song and dance with the Dodgers. Rog -- I don't believe Friedman said he would build the team ONLY through the farm system and low budget signings. If the Dodgers jump in with more than anyone else can afford, clearly that's a bad sign for "anyone else." Let's not forget either that the Dodgers were freed of far more contract when they lost Hanley Ramirez than the Giants were when they lost Pablo Sandoval. Ramirez made $16 million last season, whereas Pablo made just $8 million. In theory, that gave the Dodgers $8 million per season more to play with than the Giants. Hey, maybe the Dodgers will save Brian Sabean from himself yet one more time, and he'll sign Max Scherzer on the upside of the salary range or Ervin Santana in the middle. I'm not so sure the Giants should sign any of them, but will there ever be a trio of starting pitchers as strong as Lester, Scherzer and James Shields on the open market again? Probably so, but I'm not sure it will happen anytime soon. Read more: sfgiantsmessageboard.proboards.com/thread/2610/hypocritical-dodgers-make-offer-lester#ixzz3KwY9L58p

It's been said that perhaps the Dodgers are scared because Zach Greinke has an out in his contract after next year. Lester would be insurance in case Greinke opts out. Today's Giants rumor involves a reunion with Melky Cabrera. A player with the 2012 team was quoted as saying what happened that year is water under the bridge and they would welcome him back.

the fact that the player didn't put his name to the quote gives me doubt to it being the prevailing feeling in the clubhouse

I'd welcome Melky back. I don't know how the other players in the clubhouse feel about it, but a player like Melky is exactly the type of player they need after the departure of Sandoval, and I don't think there's anyone else available that is as versatile as Melky.
If players or anyone in the organization have a problem with Melky they need to get over it. Travis Ishikawa got over the way the Giants shit on him and came back to play for us last season. Forgiveness should go both ways.

OMG, you talk like Travis had teams all over MLB drooling over him for his services. If it had been the Moscow Redbirds calling, Travis would have jumped at the chance. And I don't care if it means finishing dead last this year...I don't want that scumbag Melky back in Murph's clubhouse ever again...NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!

I thought it was classy for Melky to write a letter to the commissioner asking him to disqualify Melky in case he won the batting title. I'd welcome him back anytime. Bobby Evans was on KNBR today and said discussions with Melky are preliminary at this point and they're much deeper with Headley.

I look at it this way...if a snake bites you one time you don't invite it back into your house for another chomp
