It seems clear that some of the Giants' improvement for next season will have to come from within. With that in mind, who will be the most improved Giant next season?

The obvious choice to me would be our talented first baseman, who had one injury problem after another, Brandon Belt. He'll undoubtedly move up in the order with Pablo gone and I think he'll have a big year. Honorable mention to Matt Cain. And if the Giants don't pick up an outfielder through trade or free agency, (they lost out on Markakis yesterday, thank goodness) I'm going out on a limb and saying thatvJuan Perez hascacdecebtvseason. He's too talented to be a .180 hitter, abdceven though I hardly predict stardom, he should be a decent fourth outfielder at least.

Sorry about the errors near the end. You'll see them sometimes when I use my iPhone because the app runs out of space on longer posts and I can't see what I'm typing!

All your choices are good, Mark. I myself thought first of Cain, since he missed about half of last season and wasn't very good when he was able to pitch. Belt and Perez are also good choices. Perez is an inspired choice, since as you point out, he was SO bad last season (at least until the very end of the postseason).
Because Cain/Peavy was actually pretty good and because as you point out Perez is unlikely to become better than a fourth outfielder, Belt -- who had both an injured and a down season -- might have the most positive impact.
Could this be the year Brandon finally stays healthy and breaks out? If I could lock Brandon up at a halfway reasonable price, I would do so right now. The Giants might well have a hard time affording him later.
Better to risk a small mistake now than a big one later on. And I do think that Belt will hit. I think he would make a good investment.
