Let's assume the Giants have enough money to acquire one of the top three pitchers. Which one would we choose?
Frankly, they all look better than I expected. I'm not sure I can pick out a clear favor, so let's look at their salary projections:
Scherzer -- 7/$178 Average $24 per season Age at end of contract 37
Lester -- 6/$140 Average $25 per season. Age at end of contract 36
Shields -- 5/$105 Average $21 million per season. Age at end of contract 39
If we rate the trio as even (an assumption we'll adjust later), Lester appears the best deal to me. His contract would be a year shorter than Scherzer's, and he would be 3 years younger at the end of the contract than Shields.
This will require a lot of analysis, and the estimated contracts (by an agent, a GM and Jon Heyman) won't be dead accurate, but the estimated CONTRACT of Lester looks to be the best.
And as Mark mentioned, the contracts will require a lot of back loading, which means that near the end of the contract the player almost certainly would't be worth nearly as much as he's being paid.
I've really rated only the contracts here, since a preliminary look shows the three pitchers to be closer together than I expected. Aside from the fact that we would probably take ANY of the three, which pitcher looks best to you?

It's close between the first two, but I'm leaning towards Lester because he's left handed and that balances the staff better. There's some rumors today that the Yankees finally woke up and made Scherzer a big offer but at this point they're saying they haven't offered more than five years. You knew the Yankees would open their wallets when the Red Sox made their moves, and I'm seeing a real possibility that Scherzer winds up with NY, Lester with the Ted Sox and a lot of fighting over Shoelds.
